Loose oil filter

Recommended Posts

GM/AC Delco recently changed their own oil filter specs from "3/4 turn after contact" to "1 full turn after contact" to avoid oil leaks. Many brand new GM vehicles were being delivered from the factory with oil dripping from the oil filters, as documented by TFL Trucks and others.

The GM TSB on this was NA-22-009, dated March 2022. It can be seen here on the NHTSA website (link immediately below). It affects all GM/AC Delco oil filters from 2000 to current year. Most aftermarket filter companies are following suit.

https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/2022/MC-10209921-0001.pdf

There are hundreds of thousands of old stock filters on warehouse shelves with boxes and decals stating the old, incorrect "3/4 turn" spec.

Because of the ridiculous closeness of the filter to the engine oil pan, you have to use a filter wrench to put it on "1 full turn after contact” tight. And then you damned sure will need a good filter wrench to remove it later on.

I have a 2021 gmc 1500 with the 6.2 gas motor.

i have had 2 times in 7-8 oil changes where my oil filter has come loose. The only way I notice it is when it rains and I have a slight oil slick in my driveway.

2 different shops did the work. The 1 st time it happened it was at a crappy shop and I lost at least 2 quarts. The filter was about 1/2 way off

today I noticed it and the filter just needed tightening up and a 2/3 quart. The filter on it is the right filter for the truck. A honest shop did the last oil change.

has anybody ever seen anything like this? Could it been something with where my filter connects to the truck?

I am going to change my own oil next time I am at my camp and see if there are 2 O rings behind the filter or something else I can’t see.

In the past I have had to mangle filters to get them off of new trucks. My last few have actually been reasonably tight. I have at least 7 filter wrenches, straps and cups in my barn. Its coming off one way or another.

I always do my own work for this reason, humans are sketchy and unreliable and I am the only one I trust. Even when the dealer offers the first oil change for free I still do it myself. I had a 2018 leased truck that the dealer did the first OC on. The next time I did it and it still had the original oil filter on it with the paint marks from the factory.

My exact same results.  I've almost always changed my own O&F for the past 50 years.  Twice I let the dealer do it on new trucks.  When the first one (2014 Duramax) when I got home and got under it to make sure things were right, I found an oil mess b/c they failed to wipe anything off.  The second time my new 2019 1500 I let the dealer do it and when it came time to change it the damn filter they must have used a impact gun to put it on.  I went thru everything I had in the shop and finally got it off.  I've finally got smart said to myself NEVER again.

Not everybody can do vehicle maintenance at home.  Military doesn't allow it in housing.  Military hobby shops are becoming a joke.  If you're using a lift and need to place something under the vehicle they will refuse to rent you the lift.  Privately owned rental homes often prohibit working in vehicles in the lease.  Break the rules and you're in breech of contract, which is sufficient for an eviction.  When it's the dealership screwing up there's something bad going on.  What is a person to do?  If it was just me and my dog, I'll risk breaking the lease.  Since I have a wife and kids, I have to pay somebody and risk them screwing up.

Condo's and apartment complexes generally prohibit working on vehicles in any manner (save changing a flat tire) anywhere "in view" of others (condos with garages, for example, can't really do anything if you're inside the garage). Similar with many areas that have any sort of HOA oversight.

When you -have- to pay someone to change your oil, finding a quality private mechanic is the way. Not only are they generally more trustworthy overall, but they can keep an eye on the vehicle as a whole and alert you to things they see before they become bigger issues.

The guy that I use is absolutely awesome to us. I've brought my vehicles there a few different times to have work done and he's called me to tell me it wasn't necessary. He's put my truck on a lift and taken test drives with me to troubleshoot things that he doesn't work on. Never been charged for any of that.

I’ve had the same shop for 40 years, he started as my muffler guy. I have used the same two dealerships for 20 years. I recently in the last 3 years started using a valvoline quick lube for inspection and oil changes. I even use the same car wash. Before the internet I’d ask around. Then I would get to know the people doing my service and stick with them. In the days of the internet it’s easy to find out the reputation of any service provider. I even had trees taken down real close to my house on the back of my property. I didn’t just randomly call a tree service. I check around. It’s really hard these days to get bad service if you do a little research. If all else fails roll down a mat and check it once you get home.
