Dash cam installation

Recommended Posts

Using Rove dash cam and install kit requires ACC and power fuses (1 ea) for power and parking standby.  Seems all fuses in the drivers and passenger boxes are always powered even though labeled for accessories.   Seems central bcm is controlling them on and off?

Asked dealer and recommended to connect to pin 16 of the DLC stating that was switched.  Put a vom on it and no still power constant.

I am thinking at this point I would sacrifice the parking standby and have just on/off w ignition.

Any ideas and how you have done it?

Not the same truck, not the same dash cam... But...

I bought fuse taps to put mine in using the hardwire kit and found it to be a giant PITA to get the taps to make contact in the sockets. Without being able to essentially "guarantee" that they would go in correctly, make contact, supply power, and not cause detriment in other areas, I opted to just run the power wire behind the A pillar on the passenger side, out under the glove box, and under the dash to the center stack where I then plugged it into the USB-A port. Comes on when I unlock the truck (as the dash is powering up). Will turn back off if I don't start it within about a minute or so. Stays on with the RAP then shuts down shortly after locking the truck.

ember1205 - certainly one of my options.  I haven't tried but was thinking of locating the wires to that plug and tapping into it to save the plug for other use.  Not enough accessory connections for me.

Be interested to see where you end up.  With 14 cameras ir whatever, you would think GM would have just created some accessory to utilize the existing hardware.

I want -less- built-in stuff from the manufacturer, not more. Their choices for certain things are not the best quality, I'm forced into things I don't want in the first place, and I'm paying way too much money for all of it... It's bad enough vehicles all have black boxes for data - I don't want the insurance companies and lawyers knowing that all vehicles have recorded audio and video info as well.

I've thought that same thing many times. I'm actually surprised that someone or some company hasn't found a way to tap that video feed into a recording device. That would give you, the driver, a lot of options that are outside the control of the vehicle manufacturer. There's no way that they are using any kind of proprietary video format. It must be accessible somehow.

I just kept it simple and went with the Thinkware setup,  Easy install, front and back cameras,   will monitor your vehicle while parked. Will monitor your battery and turn off if it gets too low.

Any way there are a lot of secondary solutions.

Good Luck

I just picked up the Thinkware cam with my GM points and am going to install it in the next couple days. How did you route the cable to the rear camera?

I am running power from the ODM connect so it can monitor the status of the vehicle for packing mode and battery status.

Ran the power up the pillar, down to the mirror.  Ran the back camera up to the mirror to the liner then around then to side, and then down to the back to the camera on the rear passenger side of the back window.

Finished mine a few days ago and it was pretty easy overall. The headliner is a bit stiff along the front windshield. The most time-consuming part was mounting the new OBD port as the bracket they provided doesn't fit great with the 2024 OBD mounting location (not sure if this is any different than pre-2024 models). There is a metal tab in the stock location that keeps the bracket from sitting flush, so I just took some vice grips and bent the tab back.

I have a '21 2500 and ran my DC cable between the top of the windshield and headliner. A couple pieces of foam backer rod keeps the cable from randomly exposing itself. I found the DS fuse block was all constant but on the PS there are several switched terminals so I hooked it up there for both constant and switched.
