Freeway driving

We’re on one of our trips to Fayetteville from Texas. I-10, 65, 85, 20, 95. The over the top speeding has reached at least 20 mph over. About the only vehicles I pass are tractor trailers. The Odyssey has the sloppiest cruise control I’ve seen. You set it at 74 it’s between 72-74. I really want 72 but it’ll drop under 70. It’s pretty comical watching the speeders. They’re all sticking to the left lane very tight. Afraid to let anyone in. You may slow them down. Somewhere over a hill a truck passing another truck will slow the herd down. On comes the brake lights. The lane hopping begins. Then all of the sudden they’re gone. And it’s peaceful for awhile until the next line shows up. Usually I can maintain my speed. If I do pass I’ll match the herds speed. Sometimes it’s 90 before I can ease off. It’s funny because they’re usually speeding up to keep you from coming over. When I move back to the right the whole bunch is now going even faster. It seems every one is out of their mind now to maybe gain ten minutes on their trip. Construction zones are ignored. When you hit the cities like Atlanta the speed limit drops they go faster. People have lost their minds.

Sounds about right. Wife ran into this a few weeks ago when taking a day trip a bit north of Madison Wisconsin on a Saturday. Badger Game let out as she was getting there. Said she's never seen so many cars running so fast bumper to bumper. I reminded her, "Remember when we left the Indy 500 and coming home on I-65?" We had an Indy Trooper behind us with lights and siren on waving like an idiot for us to move right. I'd gotten pushed into that lane by a merge. She followed us for about 10 miles before someone let us in. Where was I going to go? Where was she going to go? Doesn't have to make sense. Couldn't speed up. I was doing 80 plus against the tail of the car in front of me. Couldn't get on the shoulder. She was on my bumper screaming. That would have been a trainwreck. 😏

Herd mentality. The herd doesn't have to be large, as you noticed. Me? I call it the 'Hive'. And I try to stay out of the hive.

I'm in that right lane and a few miles per hour under the speed limit. Kind of what that sign means that says "Slower Traffic Stay in the Right Lane". Slower doesn't mean the flow of traffic, it means slower than the speed LIMIT.

Like a rock in a stream the hive finds its way around me. Pretty quickly to. :) They can honk and flash all they like. I know if was doing 10 over I'd be getting the same treatment. At least the way I do it, I'm free of blood guilt.

Wife can't do this. She is uncomfortable with all those passing cars and trucks and people on your bumper. She's also uncomfortable with running 90 mph with all those people around her at 90 and one on you bumper.

I used to be the fast driver. Feeling safe from a ticket in the crowd. At the end of the day of driving I was mentally exhausted. After awhile I realized I gained nothing

adding an extra stop for gas. Because of lousy fuel mileage with the increased speed. Now I can go the whole day on one tank. Only stopping at  rest areas for bathroom and walking breaks. Rest area stops are much faster than gas station stops. The conclusion. Slow down use less gas, stop at rest areas not gas stations. You’ll probably arrive at the same time, not rattled.

Arrived home. One little comical event although potentially dangerous. A left lane lounger parked himself just in front of a tractor trailer on his right at 70 mph. The left lane speeders were losing their minds. I stayed back enough in case of a wreck fest. It went on at least 50 miles before I exited for gas. It was probably kids messing around I’ve seen it before. All the while passing multiple signs saying stay to the right except to pass. Road noise wasn’t as bad listening mostly to music instead of talk radio. All the noise makes you wonder when the big man is going to hit the reset button. Maybe he built this ant farm for his amusement. Passed 10k miles on the odyssey since I did the trade with my daughter. The b trip deal has it at 24 miles per gallon overall. Can’t complain. Looking forward this morning getting back to the avalanche going to town for the morning walk. I still say the minivan is the best all round vehicle. Only if you have a truck too. 😎

Things have changed as well as my trip destination. I now go to McAlester OK. It’s just 6 hours away instead of 3 days. The best thing is no more interstate highways if I desire. I have choices of routes. The best part I did spend lots of time here in the past on pipeline ROWs. The scenery is beautiful and the pace is still brisk but little stress. The only challenge is making use of pit stops ( the wife) you could go awhile without seeing a gas station. My GPS on my phone keeps me away from traffic problems for the most part.
