New Tundra Hybrid? Is it Just hype?

Recommended Posts

Having owned an 07 Tundra 5.7 for 10 years, I'm wondering if Has anyone given the new Toyota Tundra Hybrid a shot?

I'm wondering if this hybrid powertrain is all hype or if its worth it.

Given that it takes the same 87 octane as the 5.3L i figured i'd compare

Both have 10 speed tranny

5.3 vs Iforce Max

HP 355 vs 437 (19% increase in horsepower)

TQ 383 vs 583 (35% Increase in torque)

Its a no brainer performance wise the tundra stomps on gm's 5.3.

Is GM planning on updating their outdated engines soon?

From what I’ve read the Hybrid V-6 Tundra is more for HP than fuel mileage. My 14 GMC with flex fuel 5.3 simply using E-85 increased the HP and TQ. Going back to reg gas on trips I got 22-23 MPG at 72 MPH. At 60 I got 24 with 345 gears. That was with cylinder deactivation off. I wouldn’t call the 5.3 out dated. Especially if the new cylinder deactivation is working as intended. I think the correct comparison to the Tundra engine stated would be the 6.2.

LOL, whatever.  The Tundra is still behind the curve, so the real question is when will the Tundra come with an engine that has a competitive edge over the other manufacturers.  Some documented reports of MPG are even worse than what Car and Driver observed from their Tundra tests.

The Tundra has never had the most impressive power train lineup, and those who purchase them are generally well aware of that.  You generally purchase a Tundra for perceived unquestionable reliability, not performance.

2025 or 2026 with the Gen 6 small blocks that are in the works.

As for the Tundra, Car and Driver seems to not think its worth it 10,000mi into their long term 40,000mi test - 2023 Toyota Tundra Hybrid Long-Term Road Test: 10,000-Mile Update (caranddriver.com)  Also, them and many others have found the 10 speed to be a messy transmission compared to the others out there.

Hybrid is great for city driving, but at the end of the day its attached to a twin turbo V6 and turbos+boost=sucks fuel.

If fuel economy empty driving was the name of the game, GM 3.0 Duramax would be my pick.  Power without turbos, the 6.2.

Believe it or not, we have a 2020 Tahoe with a 10 speed 6.2 in our service loaner fleet (don't as me why though lol) and its current average in the Trip A over almost 6000mi is 19.8mpg.

In the end?  Hit up the Tundra forums or the Tundra groups on Facebook and see what owners are saying.  Should be plenty with some miles on them now as the new Tundra has been around since the 2022 model year.
