2024 GMC 3500HD Build Frustrations

I think it's at least partially because I got in the front of the line with the '24 Fords, but came in at the middle of GM's '24 production. 

 

Still, it's a shame. I think GM has the better truck overall this year but it won't matter if they can't get it to me. 

Good luck. My buddy has been waiting for over a year for his Ford. He initially ordered an F450 and after nothing happening, ordered an F350 dually. And then again last month, another F350 dually. His initial order was for a '22, and is now awaiting a '23 which me and a couple other buddies joke around with him about it actually being a '25. So he still has all three "on order" but is still waiting.

Yeah, it's practically a crap shoot at this point no matter what. 

 

It's my understanding that the 2023's started production early cause they wanted to make sure they got ahead of GM's redesign so they pushed a lot of people that had 22's ahead, but then couldn't keep up with the total volume. Hoping I got in early enough for the 24's and that my scheduled production week holds. 

 

But again, I'd really prefer a Chevy and I'm not in a huge rush exactly…I just don't think the supply situation or these prices are gonna right themselves any time soon so I'm going for this now while I'm sure I can still afford it and the manufacturers haven't collapsed in on themselves. Again.

I placed an order for an F350 Lariat with the 7.3L gasser the same time I placed my AT4 order (March 2023). My F350 Order hasn't moved at all, and I received my AT4 in June. I actually preferred the GMC so it's no big deal, but the Ford process has just been kind of a joke.

See, your Ford order was in the middle of MY 23 production, whereas your GMC order was right at the start of their MY 24 production. I got my MY 24 Ford order in only a week or so after the order banks opened and I have a build week (10/16). 

 

It really seems to make a pretty big difference if you get in right when the order banks open, or within a month or two after. Once you get past that point and the line has bunched up and starts swinging around the block it goes all random instead of maintaining a more chronological sequence like it seems to early on.

 

Again, not entirely consistent there but does seem to be a big factor. Most of the people I'm seeing here and on other forums that have gotten their GM HD's ordered them between February and May, and most of the people stalling out are orders from June or later.

I guess chips are in strong supply now? That sure was a quiet transition into the much more obscure supply chains. Total clown show. 
 

The scamdemic changed a lot of things, and not for the better. All by design. 
 

 


I have clients that supply parts to the big three, and they absolutely had and still do have issues getting materials for certain things, this isn't some massive conspiracy.

I didn’t say it was a conspiracy. I simply asked for a reason. I operate on logic not feelings. There is no logical reason for a “supply chain” shortage.

In my neck of the woods the Ford dealership is full and dealing. I’m seeing 15K off and lower interest. The Ram dealership, Nissan and even Toyota are dealing. My Chevy and GMC dealership not so much. Especially the GMC dealership, nothing in the overflow lot. They only had one SLE truck. Plenty of AT4s and up. Maybe GMs playing games? They really like the over MSRP during the shortage?

One thing to consider in all this is the "just in time" concept of manufacturing. GM stockpiles NOTHING. All of their outsourced parts and raw materials are sourced on a running daily basis. Years ago GM began outsourcing many of its parts (divesting AC, steering gear, Delphi etc) In todays world if anyone stumbles then production has to pivot at the end point. Its like balancing peas on the edge of a knife. Everything that has been on restraint is due to supplier issues, paint, tires, running boards and electronics are just the beginning. Even Duramax has had issue with component suppliers which then impacts available units for builds. I could swing a cat by the tail around here and hit 10 help wanted signs. No one wants to work. Hell I dont recall a time in my life that I wasnt working a side hustle, now you can barely get people to work a part time gig. 

It aint going away anytime soon. Of course all this is amplified by Government meddling but thats a whole other rabbit hole.

This problem exploded in 2020. Both the “supply chain issues” and people not wanting to work. That rabbit hole is more like a cross section of an ant farm. It’s deep and vast.

You're seeing 15k off MSRP on Super Dutys? That would be the first I've heard of that; everything over here on the east coast has been 15k OVER MSRP.

My local Ford dealer has 75 Superdutys, my local Ram dealer had 15 heavy duty trucks discounted. So it’s more than 15K off of what you’re paying.

All XL's with the 6.8 that no one wants I'm guessing. 

They even have Shelby F-150s, Lightning’s, E-mustangs. Texas baby, everything is better. I wised up and left the east coast 42 years ago.
