Looking for info on buying used Sierra 2500 for 5th wheel / boat

Recommended Posts

Looking to buy a used Sierra 2500 (diesel) for towing 5th wheel / boat. I'll be putting less than 5k miles a year on it.

- Any specific years to avoid?

- I've read that Duramax can last 400k + miles but I am sure not all of them last that long (depends on regular maintenance, etc.). What is a good sweet spot to target as far as age/milage? I'd like to get about 50k miles out of it before I have to start fixing a bunch of stuff.

- I worry if I go too old/high milage at some point I am just trading a lower initial cost vs. higher maintenance costs when inevitably things have worn out and need to be replaced.

The LBZ duramax is where I would stop if you didn't know someone that could do a EGR, DPF delete on it but that's just my opinion.

All the newer duramax's make more power but at the cost of higher ownership costs. The need for DEF fluid and all the extra garbage that can go wrong with sensors and the DPF system. If you do plan to buy newer the lower the mileage the better in my opinion.
