An oblong hitch hole

Recommended Posts

What does your pin show? I would think it is wearing also. If not, maybe it was a double punch slip during the china process. Take a look at your 2" reducer insert. That thing is stamped oval. Your photographer skills suck 🥸 at taking pictures of a receiver pinning hole, cause it doesn't look oval to me, but more of a notch cut into the 12 o'clock position.

I read about your road trip being rough. Your hitch would have to have gone into positive/negative tounge weight continuously for it to "slop" out that hole and your pin will show wear.

On the farm, most connections are of the draw bar/hitch pin type. It takes a looong time to oval a hole and they are continuously hammered back and forth.

Have your wife take a photo with the pin inserted and post back. 🥸

No wear on the pin, the reducer is perfect.  Weird...

Curved end hitch pin may be a root cause. I too have oblong wear of the hitch tube hole that I can relate to the curved end shoulder of my hitch pin wearing  (more like beating) the hole out of shape.  I use an Anderson WDH with my 5600 GVWR TT.  Others on my Lance trailer owners forum have observed the same type of wear and that they commonly attribute to use of a curved end hitch pin.

And here comes Pryme and everyone else.... lol....

While studying the picture that is about as clear as the JFK zapruder film, I noticed a spot of rust on the hitch. That’s the cause, your truck is rusted out. Time for a 24.

in all honesty I would think the pin is slightly small for the hole(hey now) and is boring it out by being tugged all around in there while driving on these violent roads you spoke of.

That's what I've been using.  I'll have to find one that locks that is straight.  Thanks for the reply!!

Jettech1 -- I found a short length of 1/2" diameter piece of plastic waterline (the cross-linked hot and cold H2O type that uses the yellow glue) fit over the hitch pin and keeps the curved part of the pin away from and interfering with the hitch hole.  This may save you  the cost of a new straight hitch pin.  I may have to see about a warranty repair to my hitch though as the pin is loose in the hole from the prior wear.  I note that the 2" square sleeve adapter included with my truck's OEM 2-1/2" hitch is a loose, sloppy fit and maybe contributing to the wear situation. My draw bar is 2" so I have to use the sleeve.

Same here, I use the sleeve as well.  I'll have to look into plastic waterline mod, excellent tip and very appreciated!!

I have yet to to tow with my '23 GMC 3500HD 6.6L GAS....WITH 6 SPEED (purposely avoided the '24 10 speed), as it is just reaching 500 miles break in and is ready for its first  oil change.....

What about trying this....My dad uses it on his hitch to remove rattle and any slop.  He claims it works great!

I plan on using one myself.

Worth a try.....

CURT also makes one that is made of aluminum and installs without tools.

I noticed the holes worn oblong on my receiver after the first year of pulling our camper using the factory 2" receiver sleeve and my Equalizer WDH.  Not liking what I saw, I opted to ditch the 2" sleeve and get a new 2-1/2" shank for my WDH, as well as a 2-1/2" shank B&W drop hitch for my other trailers for a snug fit in the receiver.  I also added a few rubber bushings on the shanks to aid in reducing any rattling.

So far so good.  I did see the highest temps I've ever seen going over the poconos.  207.  It cooled right back down to normal once we were over them to a normal 185.  But it never gave me a problem at all.  I would set the cruise on 70, it would downshift into 5th at 65, then it would downshift again to 4th at 63.  I rarely had it downshift into 3rd gear.  It did several times but very rarely.  Typically 4th gear would get us back to 70 with no problem.

Not sure about 10 speed but the 6 and 8 speed now have an OEM GM revised coolant thermostat bypass assemblies that lowers the transmission fluid temperature by 30-40 degrees Farenheit under now-towing conditions, yet still provides thermostatic properties for ensuring that the transmission fluid warms up quicker and maintains a minimum in colder climates.

Yeah my sleeve is sitting in the garage. I also have a 2.5” shank from weigh safe.
