Newer truck issues to be aware of...

Recommended Posts

Currently in a 2011 3500HD Duramax dually.  I've had it 5 years now...it belonged to my dad until he passed away.  He got it new, with plans of going into the Hotshot business when he retired.  2 months after retiring, he passed away.  FFD to now...I've been driving it since he passed.  It has right at 150k on the clock and it has been T&D, along with having to have the TCM rebuilt.  I've found myself reading more and more about the CP4 fuel pump failures and am about to the point of selling the truck before the pump decides to bite the bullet and upgrading to a newer truck.  I've been looking at what few '23 models local dealers have left on the lot and '24 model Chevy 2500HDs.  I tow a 48hp Kubota tractor and implements several times a year on a 24' gooseneck (20' + 4' dovetail) and have ben thinking of starting a side job with it on my 7 day off stretch at work.  We also plan on getting either a travel trailer or 20'+ boat after my youngest graduates HS in May.  Plan on staying with the Duramax but wouldnt have any objection of dropping down to the 6.6 gas burner

What issues/problems are there with the 23-24 2500HD trucks?  Haven't seen any incentives on the HD trucks either...any special financing or other incentives on them right now?

I went with a new 2023 3500HD 6.6L Gas and 6 speed.  It's an SLE model with a few nice options.

When I was researching the 6.6L Gas and 6 Speed, I could not find any serious, recurring issues.  At least for the '23 model.  I avoided the '24, as I wanted the 6 speed.

I avoided diesel as I don't tow heavy nor often.  I tow an 8K TT on camping trips and my 16' fishing boat weekly...so the gas is the right tool for the job.  If I were towing 10K+ often, and longer distances, I would have considered diesel.  I wanted simple and reliable.  Fingers crossed that's what I'll get!

No rebates or finance offers when I purchased earlier this month.  I'm in SoCal.

I did get 3K UNDER MSRP!!

Same here...23 High Country 2500 gas...purchased in April GM had 3.9%  and 24s were just coming out (had refresh in a 1500 I traded in).....weren't many 24s available and some were aggressive on 23s at that time.....I did go to AZ as so cal was plus 5k and rare to find MSRP.....ended up paying around $7.5k or so under sticker.....gas high country's are rare and most of dealers I contacted were thinking big sales #s for 24s is feeling I got

....there was a 23 GMC SLT for 6k under sticker in northern cal but I waited too long....was bummed actually, but my fault

The 6spd is fine for me, I need payload and 6'10" bed more so

Alot of research and contacted a ton of dealers....was also my 3rd truck from this dealer in short time frame

my same exact truck was at local dealer but was 5k over sticker plus 3k in nitro, tint, etc.....

Vast difference between dealers is astounding....timing is everything

Good luck

2024s have a few little electrical gremlins but they're mostly working through those.  The improved interior and the 10 speed behind the gasser are worth getting a 24 over a 23 IMO.

23s are getting a bit harder to find but they certainly have better financing.

I got a few grand off MSRP buying from a dealer in Tucson.  The Phoenix area dealers near me wouldn't move or didn't have inventory when I was shopping in June.

Good luck!

  • 2 weeks later...

Got my '24 2500HD Duramax Denali. So quiet and full of torque compared to my 2016 Duramax. 10 speed is great, however the exhaust brake not as strong as it was on the 6 speed Allison on my '16.

Suggest option of Max Trailer Pkg. ( Code NHT ). My 2500HD with that option, came with a 3500HD rear leaf spring pack & overloads , 3500HD 12" rear axel, Rancho shocks, 3500HD Frame. 7 Way Trailer Receptacle in the bed , in addition to the one in the bumper, and 5th. Wheel Frame Crossmember with hole plugs in floor. $645.00 is a bargain for all that.

Now NO need for the Firestone Rear Air Bags like I added on my '16.

I also optioned the front HD Front Spring / Camper  PKG ( Code F60 ) $45.00.

Suggest adding a Rear Anti-Sway Bar aftermarket kit from Hellwig or  Roadmaster.  Ford, Ram, Nissan, Toyota include these Std.

Why not GM ???

Best of luck.

Towing wise what you are describing, a half ton could handle.  The 2500 gasser will definitely handle that, and you wouldnt need a dually.

I have a 22 gasser it hauls fine,  but after owning many diesels including a 21 diesel, theres no comparison between the two.  With that said i made the switch because the amount of towing and weight just couldnt justify the $200 fill ups anymore with diesel.
