Wireless Apple Carplay quits working

I got my 2024 Silverado 3 weeks ago and I'm having the same issue since my purchase. It's not just CarPlay. With CarPlay disabled, my Bluetooth connection randomly stops on it's own but just disconnecting it and reconnecting it via infotainment center it would fix it. The other day I was on a 2 hr trip and CarPlay disconnected 5-6 times using navigation via bluetooth, and while in the past I would just place it in park and shut the truck off then open the door to lock it out and shut it and restart the truck would fix it (90% of the time), this time the entire system went haywire. I disconnected the phone and it refused to disconnect. I hit the CarPlay icon and the screen went blank. I even restarted my iPhone and then forgot the truck altogether and my infotainment screen still showed my phone was connected while the phone was off and after I forgot the truck. I went ito the settings and reset it in safe mode and wahlah... CarPlay worked great until tonight, via Bluetooth. I spoke to a salesperson and he said that if I lose cellular service it will make me lose connection with my truck and I'll need to stop, shut the truck off and restart it again to reconnect. I looked at some apple conversations and concluded based on these threads that it's a combination problem that even the two tech companies either don't care about or know about...just yet. Here's a link to the apple users having CarPlay issues with other vehicles. Apple CarPlay keeps disconnecting - Apple Community.

I have never, EVER, experienced an issue with a connection for Android Auto -OR- CarPlay based on whether or not cellular service drops. I would challenge them to back that claim up.

And the discussion thread you linked to is specifically for those using CarPlay via USB connection. Are you using a cable or wireless?

It honestly sounds like you need to have the dealership update ALL of the software in your truck to latest versions. Given the myriad of issues owners are having with over-the-air updates causing problems, I've turned all of the auto-updating on my truck completely off and will not re-enable that unless it is crystal clear that GM has resolved this problem.

I took my 2024 Chevy 2500 to the dealer after trying for 2 weeks to get Apple Play to work.  It initially worked when I bought it in December and stopped working after the last radio over the air update.  My dealer told me that GM is aware and was working on another update to correct this.   It's very aggravating!   I'm also now having issues where I Cannot adjust volume on the radio at times.  Not always, but sometimes.

I’ve had my truck less than 3 weeks. When I initially set it up, Car Play would connect wirelessly but wanted to only connect when the USB was connected. I only needed a short USB to Lightning cord and got an official Apple 0.5m cord at Best Buy. On a 30 minute trip, Car Play would cut about 3 times.

I deleted everything and started over only choosing to connect to Car Play with the USB cord. Still had issues using the 0.5m Apple cord. Removed the short cord and connected one of the USB to Lightning 1m cords I had and have not had a Car Play issue yet testing on 45 minute to hour trips.

On a side note, the infotainment center went black near the end of of a 50 minute trip today. I remember reading on this forum to hold the phone hang up button until the screen starts reset. It worked and hope it’s not going to be a regular issue.

This is definitely an Infotainment issue in the 2024. My iPhone works with CP in my wife's 2021 Acadia. In my new truck, the infotainment systems shows "white" wifi icon which means my phone is connected via wifi. It also shows the "green" icons, which means I am connected via bluetooth. On my phone, I show I'm connected via wifi "myChevrolet" and bluetooth "myChevrolet" and lastly under the settings, I see CP is connected to "myChevrolet".

On the Infotainment system, AA and CP are both grayed out. If I tap the CP icon, it brings up a window with "connect". If I tap connect, its says "do you want to disconnect iPhone?" Grrrrr No! I want you to let me use CP with my currently connected iPhone!

I've tried all of your solutions. CP worked once, on a random day while driving, and has never worked again. I've also tried using my wife's iPhone connecting to my truck with the same results. How do we know Chevrolet is actively working on this?

If you want to use CP, why are you tapping on the AA icon?

Because its obviously a typo since my entire conversation is about iPhone/CP.

It isn't "obvious".

If you're actually tapping on CP and getting the message you posted after tapping Connect, then the problem is that the Infotainment system doesn't understand that the connected iPhone (which it only knows is an iPhone by name, not because of any hardware recognition) is capable of CarPlay. Take it back to the dealership and have them update ALL of the software in your truck that isn't current. If that does not help, then you'll likely need a case w/ GM to get them to dig deeper in and possibly replace the Infotainment system.

Is there a way to see if all software is up to date? The infotainment system say ~your software is up to date.

  • 2 weeks later...

It's been working fine for a few weeks.  Got in my truck again today and it wouldn't connect until I turned the truck complete off and then restarted it.

I know it's a little thing but it's super annoying.  Especially when you want to just hop in and drive.  Not spend 5+ minutes going to restart process on your dash.

I called gm and Chevy and got transferred around for 45 min.

No way to submit or track bugs.  Also no ownership from customer support.  They were all to ready to transfer me away to another department.

Final answerer was bring it into the dealer.  But when I go and do that it works just fine.

This is an intermittent bug.

That’s unfortunate Roy. Not surprised you got the run-around. Mine has been working fine for the past month. It just miraculously fixed itself. I actually had a problem once in the last month, I plugged in instead and it connected right away. Cross my fingers it doesn’t come back at the wrong time, because I’m sure it will come back. Hope you get yours working.

I have been working with technology for well over 30 years and I can confidently state that no one has ever corrected an "intermittent bug." Unless you have the ability to reliably reproduce the issue, there is no way to test whether any steps taken corrected the problem or not.

I feel your pain as I have my own list of intermittent issues on my 2024, including:

- EPB sets itself roughly 1 in 3 times parking on level ground on average. According to what is implied from the manual, this is far too often.

- Wireless charging starts working then stops unexpectedly.

- Passenger side detection system unable to detect vehicles of various size (including semis).

- Radio startup volume limit doesn't work and radio is far louder than max volume setting.

My wireless charging does the same thing…orange triangle after 69 seconds. Too much tech for GM to maintain.

Every single thing that I have encountered as a problem over the last ten years and three vehicles ultimately ties back to crappy software design.

- On my Camaro, I couldn't leave a USB stick plugged in (for music) or it causes weird things to happen with BT connections to my phone.

- Wireless charging in the truck sometimes stops working without warning. Removing phone and re-placing on the pad will start the process back up, but there's no rhyme or reason to how many times I have to do this before it KEEPS working.

- OTA updates are literally bricking trucks in certain circumstances because GM is pushing the wrong software to certain vehicles and there's no check/balance as part of the install process to ensure that it's intended for the vehicle it lands on.

- In my last truck (2015 Silverado), clicking the button on the wheel to change radio stations required waiting for the info banner to appear in the dash before it would change and play the next station. UNLESS, you squeezed the gain control on the trailer brake to cause ITS dialog to appear. WIth that in the display, radio stations changed immediately with no delay.

- You can't auto-start Android Auto or Apple CarPlay -AND- use the Trusted Device feature on your phone to unlock your driver profile.

- You can't adjust the maximum startup volume until you create a driver profile for yourself. And even then, it always loads Guest at initial start, so you need to return to THAT profile to set the value it sets to BEFORE it switches to your profile. And even then, it typically doesn't work.

GM is so focused on "tech for tech's sake" that they are leaving out the part about making sure it WORKS in real-world scenarios...
