Clunk/Pop when accelerating or stopping

Recommended Posts

I posted this in the driveline sub then found I probably should have posted here instead.

I have a 2016 Silverado with the 5.3. I have a clunk/pop (feels like it’s coming from the rear end) when accelerating or coming to a stop. I read somewhere about the u bolts not being torqued right but found a range on the internet for anywhere from 70 to 90 ft pds for them to be torqued to. I went with the low end and did 70. It took at least a full turn on each nut to get them to 70. Now it seems to have gotten worse. Do I need to torque them more? Or is there something else I should be checking?

Not sure about torquing the U-Bolts but if they have been tightened within spec, I would think you should be good there. I had the same issue with my '18 Sierra and after many trips to the dealer for multiple diagnostics, new U-Bolts, re-greasing everything, and new rear axels, it came down to stuffing some rubber into the leaf spring to stop the binding and the "popping". Been sound and pop free for about 50k miles now. Not positive thats your issue but it was certainly mine!

Hi I know this post was years ago but I m having the same issue with my 2016 GMC Sierra 1500, I was wondering where did you put the rubber on the leaf spring to prevent the “pop” noise? TYIA

Hope these two pics help.

GAH! I don’t know why the pics are upside down.
