Last count I've owned 20 GM trucks  since 1980. Chevys.  I guess I don't know jack schitt.

Enough already.

I actually started in the 70s. I had 38 before the 80s. Enough that NJ sent me a notice that if I bought one more I needed a used car dealership license. They were mostly cars just two trucks. That’s when I had most of my lettered and numbered cars, like SS, GT, 442, RT, SST, GTO. I had 12 impalas alone, my favorite. That pretty much covers it.

And this thread is on the sutdown/locked out clock.

Congratulations OP on your new truck, and hope you enjoy it for many miles!!!

Thank you!

My last truck was a Ford but this is my 5th GM over the years. None have had DFM until this 2023. I’m terrified of it because of all the horror stories. All I’ve ever heard is “bad” in regards to this topic.
Many thanks to everyone who’s been helpful, especially appreciate to the fellow that works at the dealership who chimed in. Great info sir!

It’s my own fault that I let myself get behind the times and ultimately caught off guard with this DFM surprise. I love the truck, but if had known about the DFM it would probably still be sitting at the lot.
I only have 400 miles on the truck now. It’s way too early for me to give feedback but zero complaints so far.

It would be great to get some feedback from members who have more mileage than myself on the current edition.

I always get enough warranty to cover the time I would have payments. Then the clock runs on repairs vs payments. Doesn’t matter the brand.

You are very welcome.

If you base your buying decisions from sites like this, you would be riding the bus, until you joined that forum🤔

These are great places for people to vent and complain, very few share their positive experiences and views daily.

Honestly, if it will bother you to the point, you cannot enjoy your new truck, unload it and find something that will ease your mind, JMO.

To the OP, sorry to hijack your thread.

Karnut always feels the need to chime in. .Mostly telling old stories that aren't relevant to the topic.

As far as DFM, just drive the truck and don't worry about it. The real failure rate is  less than .01% of all DFM engines. You only hear about the bad ones. Not many come on here and say they didn't have a failure.

Well I tend to worry about things like this for good reason, but I’m beyond enjoying the new truck! Excellent so far and great year end deals have made it even more attractive. Just concerned about long term reliability. It’s a huge purchase and I tend to keep my trucks a really long time😊

Thank you much. I didn’t realize the failure rate was that low!
I flat out asked a few GMC owners about their experience. Not an ideal sampling because of varying year models, but ALL were positive. None mentioned any problems whatsoever. This went a long way with me making my decision to come back to GMC again. Also the reviews. Most the detailed reviews by professionals really favored the 5.3 and the truck as well.

There you go again. I.repeat this a GM TRUCK forum. I don't care how many shitt box cars you owned. How many GM TRUCKS.? How many 2019-2023s?

You just don't get it man.

I love all the brands and I will continue to point out where GM can improve. It would be pretty boring if it was all positive koolaid drinking sugar coated information. Otherwise GM would be in fourth place before too long. Usually the people who can’t take it resort to insulting childish responses. GM change from cylinder deactivation because it wasn’t effective. If people didn’t complain they wouldn’t have. Now that the chip shortage has lessened we will see if the new cylinder deactivation is reliable. If it is I could be in the market for a new one. I pointed out good the odyssey’s works. I’m not buying a product that doesn’t work for me. I never experienced a cylinder deactivation that was non intrusive with any brand until that one.

37 years ago I went to A&P school to become a licensed mechanic. My power plant instructor was one of the best I’ve known. He would roll over in his grave at the thought of this technology. Cylinders deactivating sounds stressful on the crankshaft, heat differentials, imbalance, so many things come to mind in running an engine that isn’t consistent.

It’s obviously amazing engineering though. They sure have it smoothed out somehow. I can’t even tell when, or if it’s even happening. Coupled to the 10 speed transmission it’s pretty damn impressive to drive.
It’s just a different world with today’s automotive technology.

From what I understand DFM is a much better alternative to AFM. DFM is able to cycle which cylinders it inactivates therefore effectively spreading out the stress/strain on all cylinders over time instead of the AFM's 4 dedicated deactivated cylinders.
