Horn doesn't work in my 1996 GMC 1500 pickup

Recommended Posts

It doesn't work at all. An internet search showed some YouTube videos about cleaning the horn contacts in the steering wheel, but they cover later model trucks. Cleaning these makes sense, since the truck has been sitting for a long time and has some corrosion here and there under the hood and dash. The issue is how the remove the airbag module. I have both the Clymer and Chilton manuals which tell me how to disable the SIR system but not how to remove the cover and airbag. Suggestions? Thank you.

Good advice on the manuals. I ordered the factory manual today. I checked the horn relay and fuse, and I scraped the relay pins with a pocket knife. Afterwards, I was able to get the horn to work when I press on the left middle of the cover. I'll see how it goes while driving the truck tomorrow. I may have to clean the steering wheel contacts to get it to work better.
