Squeak/squeal when shifting?

Recommended Posts

I have a little over 2,000 miles on my 2024 AT4 3500 gasser and have noticed what can only be described as a light high-pitched squeak or squeal when shifting through the first few gears. It happens for about 1-2 seconds right as it's shifting and doesn't happen when shifting through higher gears. It's a very faint noise and it otherwise shifts very smoothly and seems to be operating just fine. Is this normal for the 10-speed? This is my first HD truck and have never heard this on any other vehicles.

I have not experienced this with my 24 but you can definitely hear a little more “noise” with this transmission compared to the 6 speed I had.  Not annoying or anything but it’s there if you listen.  My feeling though it because the pickups are so quiet now.  Hardly hear the engine.

Yeah, I'm not 100% sure it's coming from the transmission, but it sounds like it. I can also hear it if I sustain right around 2k RPMs under load. It's a very high-pitched squeak. Not sure if it's worth mentioning to the dealer yet—might try to pinpoint it a bit more...

Just another follow-up to this: I did some more "testing" today and found I could duplicate the sound in neutral by revving to 2k RPM. This excludes the transmission, and I'm thinking it's just either some air/intake noise or possibly a fan at that particular RPM. Not really concerning me so much anymore!

You are 100% correct about the quietness of these trucks.  My 22 is so quiet all I can hear is my ears ringing when driving.  I have to turn the radio on for some kind of other noise.

On a similar note, do these engines sound like they have a supercharger at times? I've noticed when driving around with the windows up and the stereo off that the engine has a bit of a whining noise to it. Again, could be intake noise or fans. Someone riding with me even commented that it sounded like a blower without me even saying anything.

Could be when your fan clutch is engaged, most gas engines get a howl going from the fan moving large volumes of air.

Just to follow up on this, I finally tracked down the source of the whistle. I took it into the dealer and they of course "could not duplicate" my concern, even though I gave them specific instructions on how to produce the noise. Anyway, I came in and took the service director for a ride and he could immediately hear what I was talking about. He asked me to leave the truck over the weekend so they could get back at fixing it on Monday, but we're leaving for a trip so I opted to take it home. Rather than waste more days at the dealer with them poking around, I had my wife get in the truck and rev the engine while I crawled around underneath to pinpoint the sound.

Eventually, I discovered that the flange between the exhaust manifold and cat pipe on the driver's side had a large gap on one side (see pic). I ended up having to loosen all three flange bolts (which was a major bi*** due to no room to work), then re-tighten to seal it back up. The sound is now gone! The flange still doesn't sit flush at the connection, though, so I'm considering having the dealer get it up on a lift and aligning it all back up a bit better.

All in all, it's a bit disheartening that it came out of the factory like this, but things could be worse I guess!

I had this issue on my 1988 Silverado with the exhaust manifold heat shield vibrating up near the spark plugs.  It was more of a ringing noise than a whistle though.

After I tightened everything up, the thought that it might have been the heat shield did cross my mind. I had to remove that small heat shield to access all the bolts, then tightened it down pretty good when I put it back on. However, that gap between the flanges did seem kind of big, so I'm still guessing that was the issue.

I am having the same issue with my 2024 Chevrolet 2500HD 6.6 gas. The squeal goes away around 40mph, but there is a groan at low speeds that I experience while parking, maybe a power steering pump. The local dealer told me that its normal, my 2022 was quiet as a mouse.

2500s are noisey, especially turning the wheel at full lock......all 3 of mine have made noise but sound like normal operation for a truck.....I chalked it up to being a HD and since all of them sounded the same so never questioned it really
