2020 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 8 speed shudder

Recommended Posts

I have a 2020 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT 5.3L w/ 8 speed transmission. 76,290 miles on it and I’m having shudder problems. Everyday when I’m driving to work on interstate I will set my cruise control at 70-85 mph and the truck shudders. Stops for a couple seconds then shudders again

I watch my rpm gauge and every time it’s about to shudder the rpm’s move up a little. So when I’m driving my rpm needle is constant moving up about  100-150 rpm’s and then boom it shudders and then rpm’s go back down and couple seconds later same thing happens. I never have a smooth steady rpm or smooth ride.

It annoys the heck out of me but I have noticed it shudders anytime I’m driving at a steady cruise speed could be 30mph or 90 mph it don’t matter.  it’s always shuddering.

From a dead stop I smash the gas it will shudder when it hits around 3rd gear also. Can anyone please help me out and let me know if you’ve had same issue or what? Thank yall

2020 should have the new fluid, i am also getting a shutter, really happens a lot when i pull my boat. i am at 55k miles

Time for a fluid change at your mileage. Especially towing. Fluid should be changed no more than every 50k for maximum life out of the transmission.

I have a 2020 Silverado that will occasionally shudder and dealership could not duplicate the issue. I did some research and found this service bulletin:

21-NA-199

Aug 9, 2022
Summary: This informational bulletin advises the technician to replace the  Thermal Bypass Valve (TBV) if the transmission has any type of repair and even if no problem was found, to replace the TBV.

I have a 2021 8spd 5.3 with same shudder.  It's been at dealer for 2 weeks and supposedly they are waiting on a gm engineer to tell them what to do.   I noticed in an older thread but a 10spd and fuel injectors fixed it which is pretty much like a misfire so I guess it makes sense.   I highly doubt it's that thermostat.. thats just because they put in too high of one and if towing the trans will overheat...

Mine's going in tomorrow, 52k miles on it. I'm wondering if this would be covered under the power train warranty or if the transmission change is part of routine maintenance.

I'll see tomorrow.

when i was still under warranty i complained about the shutter and dealer suggested changing the fluid, i was at 55k miles so ok do it. now at 68k the shutter is worse. here is the kick in the ##s, i went back and complained again and there is a new service advisor who stated that my truck may have been misdiagnosed by the old service advisor and nothing can be done under warranty anymore.

What was the procedure with the fluid change? On vehicles I’ve done, my avalanche and odyssey you don’t get all the fluid in one shot unless they hook up to your lines. My avalanche I went through the dipstick tube twice spread over two weeks. My odyssey which had a shutter has a drain plug. I did a drain and fill 3 times. On my new trucks years ago I’d disconnect the lines at the radiator and started the truck. I don’t think I’d recommend that on these new trucks. Unfortunately with these new vehicles are more fluid sensitive so more frequent maintenance is a must.

I'm assuming the process the dealer does is this:

I dropped my truck off this morning, they said they're going to test drive it and see if it's fluid or something else. I should know this week.

Update on my truck - the tech was able to reproduce the issue and has ordered a "tear apart" of the transmission (under warranty thankfully). I'm glad they didn't dismiss it as a fluid change.

They're booked so I won't get in until next month 🙄

I guess I'll update again late Feb....
