Weird Roof Noise

Recommended Posts

Have gone through a roof whistling noise, which I previously posted about, that have been unable to resolve (likely wind and roof lights/antenna).

Now, over the last few weeks, I am hearing a noise coming from the roof area. Initially, I noticed it when the vehicle comes to a stop and my very first thought was a bird pooped on the roof. It sounds exactly like that, and is near the back portion of the roof, above the rear seats. The noise is fairly muted, but noticeable.

It occurs intermittently, will not occur for a few days, then will happen a single time during a drive, and others will happen two or three times during the same length of drive. As of late, I also notice it occurs while the vehicle is moving, but at slower speeds (like under 50kmh), but it may be that it occurs at higher speeds and I just can't hear it due to road/wind/traffic noise. Every time it happens, it is a single "plop". And it is not like something between the ceiling and roof is loose and moves forward from momentum when the vehicle slows or stops as it occurs when travelling at a steady speed and I don't hear any rolling/rattling around.

I have repeatedly checked the roof and absolutely no signs of bird business.

Recently, I have been thinking it may be weather (heat) related, like some metal or plastic heating up, expanding and making a popping noise, but have been unable to establish a weather related pattern. And not even sure how I would go about confirming that anyway. And I am just grasping at straws here.

Anybody have any suggestions or ideas?

I believe there was a TSB on the popping noise. Its the plastic fairing where the CHMSL and the cargo lamps are. The plastic is expanding and contracting slightly and causing the noise, My 2021 used to do it mostly in the sun. Not sure about this 2024 since I havent driven it a lot.

I found the TSB, and as mentioned by 64BAwagon, the problem is related to the expansion of a roof component due to hot weather.

It details a fix that, after taking apart the roof brake light cover, is as simple as inserting a piece of foam.

Not sure how that reduces or eliminates heat caused expansion. Probably will just live with it.
