2022 Silverado 1500 LTD Black Paint Issues

This is my story. I purchased my 2022 Silverado 1500 Ltd Trail boss in black, and finally was able to pick it up Dec 23, 2021. I live in Regina, Saskatchewan and drove to Winnipeg, Manitoba on Dec 24, 2021. The drive there is just over 500km. The drive was under normal winter driving conditions. The truck has gatorback mud flaps and no running boards at the time. The paint before and after the wheel well looked like shredded cheese from chips. I forgot to mention I was driving on the highway, not a grid road. After dealing with the dealership , they put it through the warranty and repainted those sections. Yes there was a catch. I had to install running boards and film at my own expense. Boards $1100 and to have the the rockers and front end done with film, another $1500. I was thankful for the paint being done, but it should’ve never of had to be done in the first place.

After getting this done and it not sitting well with me, I called gm to complain as to why I was out money for something that shouldn’t have happened, it’s not like these trucks are cheap. I talked with GM customer service and was told that the decision was made and they would not entertain anything further. Remember the customer is always right. WRONG!! That is not the way it works anymore. I’ve owned 3 Chevys, 1998, 2006 and 2015 Silverado and never had any paint issues.

The truck is a year and 4 months old and now the inside of the wheel wells are chipping. Some smaller chips, but some

paint chipping are quarter size. Am I happy with the black paint? Not at all!!

Has anyone else had any issues with the black paint?

Hi, I purchased a 2021 Silverado in White and also noticed how easily their paint Chips. I looked a several one and 2 year old trucks when I was looking to purchase mine and noticed that all seem to chip Very Easily(Especially in White). I looked at a several Silverados with the painted front Bumpers and almost all of them had excessive chipping. Two of the Silverados I looked at looked as if they had been shot with a shotgun full of birdshot (well over a hundred chips). If I am Correct,General Motors now uses Water Based Paint and I must say I am not Impressed ! It appears that the paint does not bind to the primer very well at all. Nobody wants their New truck Full of Paint Chips. I would think that GM is aware of this but would probably never admit it!

The OEM's have been using water borne paints for years and the issues with chipping paint on the bumpers has been an issue that goes back to the new models in 99

There are vinyl overlays that can be put on the hood leading edge and the front bumper to protect them from chips but they are only effective on a new truck.

All vehicle manufactures not just GM use water based paint and yes it does chip easy, thank an environmentalist or tree hugger for your paint issues next time you see one.

Thanks for all your feedback. The paint is absolutely disappointing. I’m pretty sure GM doesn’t care, cause if they did, we wouldn’t be having this discussion. This then leads to, why would I want to get another truck that is even more astronomically expensive than they’ve ever been!!

I got bird doo on mine today while I was at my son's baseball game. In the 2 hours we were there, the doo baked on and etched into the paint so bad it needs to be polished out...

I also had a black AT4 that GM bought back because the whole truck needed to be repainted because of contamination.

Wow! That’s ridiculous. It seems that GM is just going to let truck owners be frustrated with this paint issue. I believe there is a lawsuit in place for the black paint but at this moment doesn’t include the 2022 truck year.

My black 2018 had 2 nickel sized holes in the paint after washing it at a carwash the first time. Mind you carwash only have about 1800 psi. I believe if I washed it with our farm powerwasher it would be entirely primer gray.

I guess they must have some left over 89-92 paint/primer to use up.....

I have a black 2022 GMC AT4X and I am getting micro pitting on all the horizontal surfaces. Wondering if anyone else has seen this. I also have noticed the paint is easy to chip and scratch. Seems like any minor thing will leave a scratch in the clear coat. I had a 2014 GMC Sierra black and it had none of these issues. I don't think its related to WB paint basecoat. The still use Solvent based clear coats.

First hing i did was 3m clear coat flim on the grill, bumper,10"strip on hood, mirror caps . the truck is black NO prolem still look's New.

GM Paint it terrible today, nothing really left to say... Nothing like needing to spend another 2-3 grand expelling all the flat surfaces so it doesn't end up looking like your truck was shot with a double barrel buckshot round!
