GM scraps its twin turbo inline 6 cylinder.

Recommended Posts

I'm a fan of displacement too. Give me a Small Block Chevy any day of the week...

But I'm getting old....I admit that.

I can't say I didn't wonder what a twin-turbo Atlas 4.2 I-6 would have done 20 years ago under the hood of a Trailblazer or Colorado. That stock 4.2 tried to nip at V8 performance figures of the time, and then the 3.6 V6 eventually and actually did. Now the 2.7 is covering V8 territory of yesteryear, plus some. Except for the noise and visceral experience, I'll give you that. I'll buy SBC's as long as GM makes them, but GM needs to keep up with the Jones'.  That's not an SBC anymore. It's a small displacement motor or an EV.

Sure they are fast but they aren't working motors to tow or haul or run off road with for hundreds of thousands of miles.

I'm amazed everyday that people are still using these trucks in first line service with 200K+ miles and being 15-25 or more years old.

I raced turbocharged Buick V6s way back when, they were awesome for what they were.  GM seemingly has reversed course and has allotted nearly a billion dollars towards the next generation V8.

EV trucks are still a fantasy.

I am and always will be a fan of the inline 6. Perfect primary and secondary balance. Silky smooth motors that don't beat themselves up with harmonics. Unfortunately, GM can complicate a hammer to the point of disfunction. :banghead:

A new V8? Okay :P

They are excellent low rpm torque monsters.  I remember the 300 I6 in the Ford F150s were great motors but had no giddy-up at speed for passing.  Same with the inline 6 in my buddies '78 Camaro when we were kids.

Yeah, next they'll turbo and supercharge it with a flat plane crankshaft!  LOL

Would a Ford 300 I-6 at 500+ hp and close to 600 lb/ft be enough to pass?

Count me in as disappointed as well. I thought for sure 500/550+ was around the corner to compete with the higher end rides.

Hopefully GM has some exciting new numbers on the 5.3 and 6.2
