Cold Air Intake

I used to love it and tuned exhaust all the way until I was 60. It got to my ears. That and loud music. I did the tunes too. My trailblazer had two twelves for bass. My son put them in. Two separate amps. Dazed & Confused full blast. Now my ears start popping. I heeded the warning.

The more I hear it the more I hate it.  It's like a low grrrr until it shifts up and then it goes away.  Foot to the floor it sounds pretty good but it still sounds weird.  I'm thinking because the open part of the box is right next to the fender well that that might be causing the weird overall sound.  Tomorrow I'm going to take off the upper snap in clear top.  If it doesn't start to at least sound better, I might just throw it in the trash.

Actually I'm going to throw the plug in on the side of that intake.  I know it defeats the purpose of having one but I'm going to try that first.  So disappointed with it.  I've bought many of them for many of the cars I've had in the past.  This one is truly disappointing so far.  For now I'm going with take 350 bucks out of your wallet and throw it in the fire and save yourself from the agony.  But I will for sure keep you all updated.  I want to be fair of course.  And it is of great quality.  I'm trying here.

From my comments I'm so getting sued by S&B now.  Honesty might not be the best policy these days.

S&B is overhyped and has paid sponsors and youtubers talking them up.  AFE makes a solid cold air intake kit.  But i honestly think the best path is to find a tube that replaces the resonator box and to keep the stock air box.  Still waiting to see if anyone here finds a tube to replace the resonator box. Too busy with work and life to experiment myself.

WC fab offers just the tube...

Somewhere I saw a fella make a tube from PVC tube/fittings and paint it black.

Not quite the Helmholz chamber the stock box is. I would think this might affect the VE tables of the stock tune somewhat. Obviously not enough to physically harm the motor but enough to affect the map.

Even MotorWeek had a segment on the benefits of an aftermarket cold air intake. All my vehicles of late, well since the mid eighties drew cold air. Some from the front others through the fender. You may be able to make an argument that eliminating the baffling or increasing air flow. Usually through less filtration adds some ponies. Ultimately lessening longevity. In conclusion only happens with wide open throttle. My experience is the seat of pants feel wasn’t different. Even though my ears were trying to convince me otherwise. Being my brothers were like minded. I usually had a willing person to test results.

Just when I thought I was going to rip that cold air intake off and throw it in a trash compactor it fully redeemed itself.  I installed the rubber plug for the side opening in the airbox and all is fine now.  The low rpm bogging trash sound is gone.  Now it has a nice crisp intake noise at all rpms.  It's barely louder than the factory system but it has a really nice subdued growl sound.  I'm thinking that the opening in the airbox was not far enough away from the inner fender causing some awful sounding reverberations.  The rubber plug solved all of that.  Do I think it was worth 349 bucks, nope.  But I was at least able to salvage it to where the sound is damn near perfect.  Thank goodness for that supplied rubber plug!!

Oh dam, I didn't know this was about the gas trucks. You are correct. Sorry for the confusion.

How come you didn’t put that in from the beginning?

It was recommended for max air flow to not install it.  Only in extremely dusty conditions.

Doesn't the gassers pull air from the hood scoop and above the cooling stack? It should get plenty of air not having to leave the rubber plug out. Its only, what 400 cu in and naturally aspirated?

Unfortunately that hood scoop is fake on the gas trucks. It does like to hold water and spray it up onto the windshield though so that’s fun haha

And it loves to streak that faux soap all over everything too from the car washes.  I had a similar setup on that SRT charger we had, except it did provide air to the engine, not the intake but to the engine.  I think I may cut those vents out to at least provide more cooling air to the engine itself.  The only downside I had with our charger is that a lot of bugs and crap wind up on the top of the intake...easily removed with a garden hose.
