Is Google in the trucks gone ?

Recommended Posts

Received my 2023 3500 SLT in early Nov. Ordered mid June

First I liked Google maps over the Android Auto navigation, and could not use it. (That may take some time to get use to) Next I wanted to figure out how to add my favorite music app that is not preprogrammed into the truck. Looked up how to do that and it said to use Google play. Looked at the truck systems and Google play is not there. Then remembered something I read a while back, that Google and GMC have cut ties.

Is that correct and is there any way I can get it installed ?

Using android phone.

Well google owns android auto and they choose to include waze (which they also own) as their map routing of choice. GM does offer a basic maps app. You can use the android GMC app to customize the apps installed. Open the app, pick more, remote personalization, apps, and switch on/off what you want, then save changes.

I use Google Maps via Android Auto in my 2023 3500 AT4 that I picked up last week. I have the factory navigation as well.

In all of my previous vehicles factory navigation was required to use Google Maps. I don't know if that's the case here, but I thought it was worth mentioning.

I have the 2022 custom model 2500 with no nav and have an android phone, my google maps, waze etc etc works perfectly on my tiny 7 inch screen using the USBc lol.

Ok. I thought the owner's manual stated that Android Auto was on all trims. But this is my first vehicle which is like that so I wasn't sure. Either the OP has a warranty issue or they aren't doing something correctly I guess.

As for music, I use a USB stick with about 2000 songs on it and the list is still growing. So I can't offer much assistance there. But I did use YouTube music to play songs off of my phone when I first picked up the truck as my old USB stick would not work as I think it was USB 1.0 or 1.1 and the truck wouldn't recognize it for whatever reason. I used a newer stick and it worked fine. Both sticks were the same format (FAT32), so I'm not sure what else it could have been. The old stick still works in my other vehicles...

Here's what my wife and I do.  My truck doesn't have Sirius...sucks a bit but here's our workaround.  My android phone is plugged into the USBc port for waze and maps, and still can be used for phone calls and texts.  My wife can hook her phone up to the system via bluetooth and play her songs over the radio while we are driving.  That's a very cool feature in my opinion that it will recognize both of our phones, one being hardwired to usbc, the other being used for music via bluetooth.  Very cool...

Google is integrated directly into the infotainment system in 2023 1500 LTs and up and 2024 HD LTs and up (and their GMC equivalents).

If you are looking for Google Maps, it will be utilized through Android Auto including other apps like Apple Music, Spotify...etc. The stock Chevy head unit can download a few crappy interpretations of apps, but plugging your phone in by USB and using Android Auto will be far superior. When you do so, you basically put a "skin" over the GM operating system. Once in Android Auto, you can use the touch screen to go into Google Maps and also have something like Apple Music...etc playing on the bottom tab of it.
