green key install

Recommended Posts

The concept is simple and getting the old keys out is easy. Getting the new keys in is much tougher, it takes a lot of pressure to compress the torsion bars enough to get the adjustment bolt back in. I tried a heavy duty C-Clamp, but just ended up bending it. I resorted to taking it my local shop and they had to tear apart the front suspension to do it. When I found out, I was WTF, all you had to do was compress the key. Anyway, get the correct clamping tool, or find a shop that knows what to do. Done right, it would take 30 min, tops.

What I did was take a 2 arm gear puller, and cut a u shaped piece of 3/8 plate. I removed the arms from the gear puller and put the U over the entire torsion bar adjuster bracket and bolted the gear puller to it.. That way it cannot come loose and take your face off. Using just the gear puller instead is dangerous because when you try to load the new key it starts bending the lip of the bracket. When mine started doing that I found a better way. This is much safer. Of course if you want to buy the real puller from GM or ask a buddy at the stealer, that works too. This was quicker than a trip into town for me though.
