Oil Consumption

I have since traded the truck in I originally started this thread about but I'm convinced it was probably something like the PCV system acting up because it was only going through oil for about a month and then it stopped and never came back.

What did you get to replace it

Yes sir, My truck burns approximately 1qt/1000 miles, has been to the dealership multiple times since I got it 2 years ago. GM says it’s normal. They did replace the seals last time it was in but won’t go beyond that. It’s pretty frustrating! I’ve also already replaced a transfer case and a transmission as well. Get the duramax and you will be money ahead.

My 2021 never used a drop of oil and so far my 2024 hasn't used any in 3700 miles with 1600 of that towing a total of 13k with my fifth wheel

I went with basically the same thing with the diesel engine, a 22 Chev Custom 2500HD.

I just got back from an extended trip. 4000 total miles with almost 3000 of that including 13,000 lbs of trailer and gear. The disptick still shows full and the oil is visually (not that it means much) not very dirty at about 40% oil life. the truck now has 5000 miles on it with the first oil change at around 600 miles. My 2021 was similar pulling the same load and trailer but with the 6 spd.

That's good to hear, all this chatter about quarts of oil being burned are making me keep my 6.0 with 6 speed a little longer.  My 2012 will be twelve years old on April 13th and only has just under 70,000 miles so keeping it until this oil burning issue with the 6.6 is figured out shouldn't be a problem.

I dont know the numbers or the circumstances on the ones that are using oil. I do know that other GM engines I have had my hands on have greatly reduced consumption just by changing brands of oil. I dont have any evidence but my WAG would be the additive pack may have been better suited to the vehicle with the new oil.

I have been seening that there are several videos and posts regarding oil consumption in the L8T, and many posts also refuting it.  Could be spotty cases.  But one thing to remind folks is that the manual states very clearly to wait overnight to check oil, or at least 2 hrs.  I check mine after overnight exclusively, and find maybe 1/8 qt consumption every 4000 mi, towing or not towing.  Very low consumption.
