Sierra 1500 Block Heater Install

Recommended Posts

Thought I'd make a post on this since there is basically no information out there. If you live up north and want to install a factory block heater on a 19-23 Silverado or Sierra, GM doesn't have a kit listed anywhere for a block heater. Instead order the following kit for the Full Size SUVs 84916467. It comes with everything you need including an extra small plastic bracket you can throw out. Cheaper than ordering the parts separately as well.

There are no installation instructions but the hardest part is figuring out where to route the wires. Start at the front and mount the black plastic mount where the wire appears coiled and zip tied. This mounts on the bumper frame, will try and get a photo soon. It'll continue to feed on the drivers strut mount and back down. Find the clip holes along the way.

You can pull the 17mm hex plug towards the rear of the engine. It's fairly obvious on the drivers side. If you do so without draining coolant, have a big catch bin and don't lay under it or you're in a for a soaking. You'll lose about 3 quarts, easy to fill back up later on.

Screw in the block heater, tighten to around 37-40 (seems to be the consensus). 26mm socket (I believe you can get away with a 1 1/8")

Plug it in and fill back up the coolant as you normally would.

Hope this helps. Like I said, hardest part is figuring out the route for the wire and where the plastic mounts to the bumper frame. I did end up zip tying some extra spots.

Some added photo's. Harness may not be exactly where it needs to be, but the plastic mount at the front is, shock tower attachment and where it comes back down to the side of the engine. Seemed to fit perfect for length and it not around any moving parts. Bit went under there, car wash this morning.

Block heater harness plugged into the heater. I ended up bending the metal tabs back so they don't rub against the heat shield on the sensor beside it.

Behind the bumper, harness that passed through to plug into.

Plastic mount clips in right about this area. Hard to see, but it sits ontop of the bumper frame here. That's the back of the drivers fog light.

There's two small holes in the framed under the body mount here, the plastic harness mount lines up with these, ones a christmas tree clip, the other just a line up pin. Also has a oval style christmas tree clip ontop, you can sorta see it sticking through to the left of the body mount from above.

This is the plastic mount with the thermostat built into the harness sitting on the bump framing looking towards the back of the truck.

Top of the shock tower, clips on one of the tower bolts and right beside as well.
