OCI, not when but why?

Recommended Posts

Here is a VOA of SS 5w30.  In one of the videos the guy from Amsoil said they use the highest base oils you can buy - 4's and 5's.  You could see GTL though on some of their SDS a while back.  No issues there.

Background:

"2012 Cruze Eco 1.4L Turbo. This car has seen nothing but AMSOIL Signature Series 5W-30 since 2013, and has been tuned since as well, first with Trifecta then with BNR, making about 50hp and 70lb-ft more power *to the wheels.* Starting in about 2015, the car was used to tow my 14' boat as well as my utility trailer and various uhaul trailers. Since I started working from home full time in 2015, most of the driving was short trips, wide open throttle to redline daily.
At 72k miles, I pulled the cams to upgrade valve springs. The oil in service at the time of this disassembly had 12,500 miles and 2 years on it, about 1/4 of which was with a trailer behind it and the rest of it hitting max boost daily. I stopped caring about fuel economy once I stopped commuting. The oil change prior to that went 15,622 miles and 18 months, and all oil changes before that were at 10,000-15,000 miles (dealer drained it a couple times to service the oil pan and PCV system or they'd all have been 15k miles)."

October 5, 2017 So, this VOA is during the SN service class. Even Pre SN+ (May 2018 effective date) That's the date of posting on BITOG.

Shell list GTL CAS number: 848301-69-9 for Shell Base Oils (They are the only manufacture)

Forging strong links – enabling the global expansion of natural gas (shell.us)

amr-asl-alm.pdf (amsoilcontent.com)

Yep, as of 2022 not there in section 3. In fact, not much of anything is. It's what they do.

GTL Base Oils_Nov15 TLT.pdf (stle.org)

Middle column, center paragraph.

Very little published data exists on the properties and performance of GTL base oils, so it is very difficult at present to compare them accurately with alternative high-performance base oils. The only current sources of GTL base oils is Shell, from the waxes produced in plants in Qatar and Bintulu (Malaysia). Shell sells only the low viscosity (3 cSt) base oils to the market, so the precise properties of the higher viscosity (4 cSt and 6 cSt) base oils are known only to Shell.

As far as I can find out these base oils are a product Shell doesn't sell to others. Both plants put all production into Shell Helix and Pennzoil Platinum and distribute to 100 countries.

Oh there are many SP versions showing the same oxidation value.  It hasn't changed in 5 years.

LOL we are posting faster than this is updating. :rollin:

Tell ya what. I'll add it back to my list of Ester containing oils with values over 30.

Thanks for toughing it out.

LOL no problem.  Sorry I should have started off with these I just randomly grabbed one.

I noticed their Euro oils have an oxidation value of around 30.  The Dominator 15w50 is 40.

I don’t suppose you have a similar chart on the 0w40 SS? It seems to hold up really well in the Mopars so I’m kinda curious. I’ve never seen anything on oxidation value for it.

Somewhat unrelated…The Amsoil SDS are funny. You can still find some older PDFs floating around. Kinda sad comparing them to the current ones. You can see the decline of usable information, and possibly the decline of quality of base oils over the years.

Tough call between Amsoil SS and HPL.  HPL is more transparent across the board about what they use and they offer more interesting grades in top tier formulations.  Amsoil has SS but all their lesser oils aren't as unique and at the same performance of SS.

Amsoil gives you more tested data though.

5w20 - HPL $16.95 quart, SS $11.89 quart member price. Amsoil would be good enough for me.

The Amsoil OE oil I use works for me.

Cost of HPL sent me to Chevron Delo 600 ADF 10w30. The no VII 5w30 HPL might be a solution for L3B 2.7Turbo that are eating oil.
