6.2L (2020) starts then dies immediately

Model year 2020, manufactured in late 2019, 6.2L with ~70k miles, ~1,900 hours.  

 

Engine suddenly won't run.  It fires up, idles rough for one-two seconds, then dies.  Runs no longer than 2-3 seconds.  This has all transpired in the last hour.  

 

I returned home from a short errand, shut engine off and went inside, walked back outside to start the vehicle but have not been able to get it to run ever since.  Engine was shut off for ~10 minutes between running normally and suddenly dead.  

 

No lights on dash, no 'check engine'

 

Any ideas?  Perplexed.  

 

Feels fuel related (pump? pressure?) or maybe a sensor is erroneously shutting down the motor.  These are just guesses, I'm somewhat at a loss given the motor gave no warning of issue and has been running pretty much flawlessly.

 

Any tips or hints are appreciated.

She just fired right up!  What in the world.  The motor just started and idled without batting an eye.  

 

No codes (though, I don't have a super sophisticated ODB2).

 

Kids in bed, I just walked outside to check for codes, ~7pm where I am now.  As mentioned, the motor started right up.  ~65 degrees F outside.

 

It was ~1:30pm when the motor was last running, maybe 75 degrees F.  1:45pm when I first experienced the start / rough idle / die.  As referenced earlier, felt like the motor was starving for fuel.  I tried restarting the engine a dozen times this afternoon with the last failed attempt at ~4:30pm.  

 

Is vapor lock a thing with these engines? Is there a filter somewhere that might be blocked?

The high fuel pressures usually prevent vapor lock but some of the motorhome engines have a fuel module to prevent it. This is the time of year they change the fuel formulations to "winter gas", They call it "oxygenated" here in Mass so maybe that has something to do with it

I thought vapor lock was a thing of the past but ... but it sure felt like something similar.

 

Your point is well taken - feels like this is going to be an annoying issue until something ultimately dies.  The dealer wanted me to put it on a tow truck immediately yesterday.  Of course, it would have arrived at the dealership, they would have looked this morning and it would have started with no issues...

 

Could this be a fuel pump going bad?  I surely cannot be the only 6.2 out there that has experienced this.

 

Is there anything in the fuel system, from tank to cylinder, that could potentially be loose?  

 

Full tank of costco premium gas, based in Georgia.

any chance there's some water in your tank? NEVER buy gas when the tankers there filling the tanks. ALL underground tanks have a couple inches of water in them and when they dump the fuel load it stirs that up and if you are filling up you WILL get some water mixed with the fuel. There are NO filters on the pumps/dispensers. Also didn't you just get a pant-load of rain from Ian? Around here not many ppl buy premium fuel so it would be possible to get some water mixed with the fuel if they didn't check and pump the excess water from the tank after the rain

Mine is doing this RIGHT now it started happening a few hours ago so I disconnected the ground on the battery and let it set for a couple hours, reconnected it and started it and it quits in just a few seconds, supposed to start a cross country trip on Tuesday of course.

there have been multiple posts of that starting problem but it is usually accompanied with malfunctioning gauges etc, I ran into it on my friends truck but lucked out and disconnecting the battery a couple times then connecting with the key on cured it. I got lucky! As far as I know no one has posted the cause or cure but I think BCM or buss problem. If you have remote start try that and see what happens, on my friends it made the ignition switch inoperative until disconnecting the bat again then it started. on his truck the gauges didn't work, the blower and radio wouldn't shut off
