2022 silverado faulty trailer brake controller and buggy camera when trailer connected

I'm having the exact same issue sans the camera issue.  Same technical bulletin given to me by the dealer and C159C code. My dealer gave me the information, I called GM to ensure I opened a case - I bought my 2022 refresh 3.0 RST to tow a small camper for my family and I.

The brakes work fine for a few minutes - then they throw a message onto my info panel "Trailer Brakes Disabled Service Required".

I thought it was my trailer, however had my neighbors tow it with their Ram and Ford, neither had any issue.

I called my dealer, they informed me it could be the technical bulletin/code above, but to bring it in - they confirmed my truck was falling under it.

They did wire an aftermarket controller into it on Friday, which I will test this afternoon (was running around all weekend with kids and events). I also called customer service this AM to get a case number (albeit they cannot find the technical bulletin on their side) - but the most frustrating part of this the lack of transparency and estimated timeline to fix.

I found this truck in transit to my dealer because it had the package with the brake controller and cameras in the mirrors that will shoot back either side when the turn signal is on, my wife booked a few camp sites for us this fall (including this coming weekend) - if the external controller doesn't work, we will need to cancel those, and regardless, the brake controller with wires up to my center console is not going to be an acceptable long-term solution.

I wish:

1) I was told about this during my purchase - I doubt my salesman knew of the issue - I put my wife, myself, and other motorists in danger by driving he rest of the way home from the trailer dealership, but took it easy, however when I did need to stop - the brake smell was obvious.

2) I could find more transparency online regarding the PIT5948A/C159C online, this is one of the only places I could find a post on it.

If this external brake controller doesn't work, I'll video the issue in my driveway and post on YouTube to show you the issues I'm having.

edit/update - The external brake controller did not work.  I've photo the message I receive when trying to use the integrated controller.

This is the exact scenario that mine happens. Works for a few minutes then boom goes to crap.

Here is the Bulletin.

I agree this is total bs. I was between a ford and this Chevy and the more I think about it I think I made the wrong decision 😞

BULLETIN #PIT5948A.pdf 141.95 kB · 8 downloads

Thank you Shield1984, this info is very appreciated! It is was the dealership told me too: unknown issue, GM working on it. Reading the report I see the bulletin was created 3 weeks ago, on September 27th. I believe it will take some time to GM engineers to figure out a solution, but hopefully not more than a month!

Yes - I'm a little "at ease" now, I'm glad I saw that date.  I took delivery of mine on 9/17 - now I'm not mad at my salesperson because I discussed the use case with him at length.

Update - The dealer rewired the external brake controller, I got it home and tested - its working to brake my trailer w/o going out (even thought he message on the screen keeps coming up). I feel safe to tow my trailer with my family this weekend for a short trip to a local campground to "try out the new camper".  I do appreciate the dealership's service department for doing this for me but this is unacceptable to start with from the manufacturer.

I am giving GM until 10/27 to remedy before I start lemon law process - 30 days after the bulletin was created.  I've documented every call, trip, interaction, opened a case with Chevrolet as well. I will not let this go 6 months of "waiting" for a fix w/o getting into a different truck to fulfill my use case.

I received an update today from my dealer. The regional service manager had a meeting with my dealers managers and they have a fix in process. GM engineers have redesigned the controller and now we are waiting for the redesigned controller. They are estimating about a month before the replacement part will be available.

Apparently it’s a more widespread issue that people who are towing are finding for the most part. At least I know it’s more than just us. Good thing I didn’t just trade it on another truck which prob would have had the same issue.

I’ll update when I hear more.

Unfortunately, I am having the same problem.  I have a camping trip booked this weekend as well and I guess my $60k Chevy Silverado that I purchased 2 weeks ago is going to put an end to that.  How does this happen?

This is certainly not what we like to hear, Edavis08.  Please know, customer satisfaction is extremely important to us. Our team would be more than happy to take a closer look into the concerns with your Chevrolet Silverado. To do so, please send an email to [email protected] with ATTN: Edavis08/GM Trucks in the subject line.

I too am having this problem.  I purchased my truck in August specifically to tow.  Had the issue and bought it in to my dealer right around the 9/27 release of the PIT5948A bulletin, although the dealer wasn't aware of it at the time.  Dealer said everything works on their simulator (of course).  I brought the truck home and completely rewired my travel trailer brake system, and replaced the brakes and hubs.  Still had the issue.  On my second trip in to the dealer they found the bulletin and had no answers for me.

I talked to my dealers service manager and he said to start a lemon law buyback, I must talk to GM.  He stated GM has no known cause for this (which is what the bulletin says) and that there is no ETA for a fix.

I have called GM and they took my information, but they couldn't even find the PIT5948A bulletin.  The only resolution GM would give me was to send me to the Better Business Bureau.  The GM person I talked to said to go to this website to fill out my claim: https://bbbprograms.org/programs/all-programs/bbb-autoline

I'm pursuing the lemon law.  I've had this truck for 3 months now and have only driven it to test the brakes with each troubleshooting step.  I'm sure I'll have to eat my additions I've put into the truck (nice new Leer canopy, airbags and compressor), but it's better than having a $60k paperweight taking up space in the driveway.

@Sam Elmore This exactly. I have a case open with GM - my rep cannot reference the bulletin and "there is nothing on the recall page"   my dealer's service manager has been great.  He's following up weekly with his district rep but no indication as of this AM on the "identified fix" from this forum next week.

I'm honestly appalled by the lack of transparency.   Someone isn't going to know about the issue, tow a trailer and be killed/kill someone when they cannot correct sway.  I need to look into lemon law as well.   I've been to the dealer twice already (install external brake controller, then back to fix the wiring bc it wasn't right the first time) and of course will need to do again "if" there is a fix for them to do that and take out the external controller...

Well I am glad I saw this post. I just picked up my new boat in my 3 week old Sierra 1500 2022.5.  The trailer has the EOH braking and on my way home I kept getting this message then it would go away then come back. Finally 2 miles from my house this disabled message came on and no more trailer brakes. I though it was a trailer EOH fault but clearly its my truck. I wish we would know when this fix is coming.  I can't trailer a 9.5k boat/trailer with no trailer brakes.

Thanks for the info. I just found out today I have the same issue with my 3 month old Sierra trailering my new boat with EOH brakes. Not a good thing when trailering almost 10k worth of weight behind me.
