I have 2023 gmc sierra elevation and I added footwell leds. You take the last black connector towards firewall and slot 1 which is empty I put a paper clip in it and added a but connector to the end of the paper clip connected the wire and grounded the other wire, now my LED’s turn on and fade out with the dome lights and turn on when any door opens. Thank you guys.

Question if you are still around:  Did you find a grounding location on the driver’s side?  If so, where was it?

Thanks!

Any structural metal with a bolt is likely grounded.

I put a ring terminal on my wire and put it to a bolt on the center console near the feet, there is one one either side.

Very helpful as usual.  Thanks!

Great thread.  I would never have known how to properly wire these footwell lights without your info.

Hey there Matt you seem to be pretty educated about this so I tapped into x1 cavity 1 and my lights turn on and shut after about a second I’m thinking it may be pulling to many amps what do you think ?

mind you I’m installing LED strip lights one on each side of my truck

I believe the limit for that pin was around 2 amps, 2.4A to trip if I remember correctly.

Update I did get them to finally work, turns out the light strips were pulling to many amps causing it to trip the fix for me was to cut my light strips from 5 feet to just shy of 3 feet (34 inches). also found out the amps tend to spike on that circuit when turning the truck on so they would work with the truck off and opening and unlocking the door but when the truck is turned on (and the dome lights on) they would turn off as of right now 34 inches seems to be the sweet spot for me hopefully it stays that way thank you to everyone who helped me out!!!  (RUNNING BOARD LIGHTS)

Seems like we have some fairly knowledgeable people on this thread. It would be great if someone could help direct me.

I have a 21 Silverado LT and just looking to hook up the backlighting LED bulb (1 single bulb) for a gauge I’m installing, and would like it to behave like the dash clusters lighting does, with dimming, etc. At least if it could turn on/off with the ignition.

Any help or direction with where I’m able to tap into, or how I can set it up, would be greatly appreciated. Ty

This worked great for the illuminated step plates as well as the LED puddle lights I installed.  Only change I made was that i soldered the wire to the paperclip.   Thanks again for the tip.
