OT: Tow Rig Update: STSs are off, BFG MTs are on.

Recommended Posts

I just got my truck back from having new 35x12.50x16 TrXus STS' taken off and new 315x75x16 BFG Muds put on. The STS' had an annoying wobble from about 35-50mph. You could take your hands off the steering wheel and watch it dance.

Anyway, FWIW, the BFGs are not markedly louder at all. Best of all, they are perfectly smooth riding and are probably saving me about 25# per tire.

The shop had replaced another set of STS' earilier in the day with the same problem. I'm not going to say that Trxus are all bad because of my experience. But it does seem strange to have two bad sets in such a short time. I guess it's just an anomoly. I know lots of people successfully running them and are really happy with them. I guess, for me, it just wasn't meant to be.

You're lucky you got 4 good BFG's on the first shot. I've read about several people on this board and others that have experianced the same problem with BFG's as you did with your TrXus.

The good thing is that you have lost 25 lbs of unsprung weight per wheel. That will save alot of wear and tear on your suspension and steering components.

Alot of people swear by BFG's, and if you get a good set and take proper care of them, they should last a long time...

I have those tires....they get louder with age. Got any pics???

Yea-- I've got the same tires on my Jeep TJ, except in 33x12.50.15s. They're sitting at about 28 miles and still look great. I don't have any vibration or weird wear patterns with them at all--and they still not all that loud. They definitely don't howl bad.

The Goodyear MTRs which were once on the truck were horribly out of round and worn badly after about 31k miles. That said, on a heavy truck, I don't really feel that's worth complaining about--though I know other tires have done better.

Don't have any pics yet. I literally picked up the truck 3 hours ago. I'll get some up one of these days. I guess I need to find a host. Any suggestions?

Yea-- and I've read of the same issues with Pro Comps, Goodyears, Mickey Thompsons, and Parnelli Jones. I really don't think a perfect tire exists. There are just too many variables when everything is factored in.

Yea, like I said in another post, I've got these MTs on my Jeep and they have been nothing but excellent. 4 Wheel Parts treated me very well on this whole deal. I bought the extended tire warranty (but received free mounting and balancing) and got free tire rotation and balancing for the life of the tires. I'm pleased with the deal.

Yup-- that 25# will also save my brakes and, in a small way, improve performance and gas mileage.
