Moving to 2500HD From Ford?

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone. I would like to hear you general thoughts on a couple of items I am considering. Over the years I have driven both Ford and GM/Chevy trucks. During those years I have preferred the Ford due to comfort and convienence for the pickup trucks - this of course is subjective.

Don't despair however my fellow Chevy fanantics. I do restore muscle cars and exclusively Chevy's!!! Specifically 67 Chevelle SS and 70 Chevelle SS big blocks, which I own and love.

Back to the trucks. I had a Silverado way back when the 4 speed auto tranny came out and that truck was a pos, always breaking. Had a Dodge for a short time then purchased a few GMC Yukons which I really enjoyed. Had to get a pickup for various tasks and when Ford introduced the Supercrew that was the ticket. Moved to a Ford Supercrew which I drove for a few years because there was no 4 door 1/2 ton Chevy pickup. Purchased an Avalanche for awhile but got rid of that in 6 months due to leaks and determined that the features [mid gate] of the truck were not for me. Went back to a Supercrew which I now have.

But now I am going to a larger RV and would like to go to a 2500 series or F250 to pull more of a load and the kids are BIGGER! Do not want a diesel so the F250 is probably out, leaving a GMC or Chevy 2500 or 2500HD. I like the idea that I can get the 6000 or 8000 gas engine (if I remember the numbers correctly). What I don't like, is that the GM products sit lower than the Fords. I like being up there so to speak. What I would like to know is in the aftermarket place what are the possibilities for lifting the 2500 and outfitting the 2500 with bigger tires? Also, for any of you that have driven Fords, what is your take on the brand switch?

Don't know if you already have or not, but at least test drive an F250 with a 6.8L V10. I was surprised with it's performance and ended up buying one over a year ago and have been pleased with it. I traded in an 01 Silverado ext cab 5.3L which was also was a well-built truck with no major complaints.

From everything I've read, and my own experiences with Ford V-10s as compared to the Chevy 8100 (about 496 cubes)-- the general consensus is that the Chevy motor is the better powerplant between those two. The Ford: 310hp/425tq, while the Chevy is 340hp/455tq.

What I don't know is the # of the RV you're going to be pulling. Obviously, there's a point where the diesels make more sense.

Lift? You name it. There are options for every possible kind of lift you could ask for. It depends on how high you want to go and what size tires you want to run.
