11 Months, Another rear Window Leak, Dealer wont cover.

11 months after having my rear window replaced for leaks, its leaking again.  After noticing the leaks and stains, I took it to the dealership to have it repaired again thinking "hey, its been 11 months, they should fix this".  Unfortunately, the dealership wont cover it under warranty because I put over 12k miles on it since the repair and the repair was for 1 yr/12k miles.  Mind you, this repair was made while the vehicle was still under the  factory warranty.  This seems absolutely absurd that I have a vehicle that's less than 2.5 years old, I'm on my second rear window, and I'm having to pay for the replace/repair costs on components that generally last the life of the vehicle.  Next one will be Leevon's DIY fix pinned to the top of the message board.

 

Dang, I love my truck, and I've been a gm guy my entire life but this is getting old.

That’s complete bull$h!t.  Go in there around 11 or 1 o’clock when it’s very busy.  Be very stern, loud, demanding, but not out of control. Make sure you let everyone sitting in the lobby room know your situation, when you’re talking to service department. 
 

I know this is an apples to oranges comparison. But it’s same concept. My stepdad and I had a situation a few years ago with an ATV and a belt constantly slipping.  He went up there right before closing. Nothing got done. I said HELL NO!  Went up next day. Lobby was full. Said my piece, and people in lobby were like….”oh they won’t warranty things!!”   Men behind counter didn’t like that!!  ATV Was back up and fixed that same day for free. I told the head manager and business owner that this isn’t how a good business should be run. They agreed. 
 

There is no reason it shouldn’t get fixed especially since this is a serious known issue with the T1 trucks. 
 

I have been very fortunate (knock on wood) that after my purchase and fix right away in the truck. I haven’t had issue again. I truly believe it has to do with the “clowns” at the stealerships not sealing it properly the first time. They guys knew exactly what was wrong with mine when I bought it and had it for 2 days to make sure it was done right.

Did you ever get anywhere on your rear window leak?

Gm just wants to get you past the 3/36, once that happens the majority of the time you are on your own unless your dealer goes to bat for you. This is a good lesson for the extended warranties are not worth it people, everyone i bought paid me back x2 at the bare minimum. All it takes is sometimes one or 2 issues during the 7 years of extended coverage to pay you back what you invested into it, these trucks cost too much to fix to be on the hook after only 3 years or 36k which some people go past year one of owning!

I do approximately 35K a year so I blow through a 7 year warranty in 2.5 years, and I RARELY have issues within the first 3-4 years, regardless of mileage, so the extended warranties have a VERY slim chance of returning my investment on my work trucks.  If I drove them 10k miles a year, I would do it in a heartbeat, but that's not the case for me.  This GM rear window leak is proving to test my patience though, especially since they declined my warranty for it based on mileage even though it was only 11 months, as if weather proofing should ever go bad in 11 months regardless of mileage.  So basically, if I could get a non-powertrain warranty based entirely on age and not mileage (pipe dream of course), then I'd be all in.

I completely Agree. I always purchase extended warrantees; they have come in handy. I just tapped into mine for my 2016 Tahoe: The Infotainment system would go dark periodically or mix up the screens.  GM put a brand new infotainment control system in.

Yep, GM just shoves some sealant in there hoping it gets you to 3/36, so then the correct fix is on your dime.  If it was me, considering what GM probably wants for a repair, there's some good threads here and videos on how to do it yourself.  I'd probably take that route if I was out of warranty on my 21'.  Partly because I'm pretty sure I'll do a better more considerate/cleaner job than I've seen dealers do.  The job the dealer did on my 20' with a rear window leak looked like they let a 3 year old use it for finger painting practice with sealant. 

 

I also agree on the extended warranties if you keep a vehicle past the warranty and don't drive a huge chunk of miles.  As long as you do your homework and make sure if it's not GM it's a reputable company.  These days everything is so ridiculously expensive it's not hard to recoup $2k.  I'd imagine since a dealer charges $1200 for a headlight for one of these trucks, that by the time they replace it, you're not far off $2k.
