Dirt in the MultiPro tailgate

Recommended Posts

Honestly, I rarely use my truck for trucky things... but when the city offered up free compost, I was all over it :)  Drove over to the lot where they had a nice pile of super smelly compost/dirt (bed still smells like a dairy farm 2 weeks later)...  shoveled a bed full... took it home, shoveled it out...

Now, my tailgate is full of dirt/compost. I've pressure washed the thing, through some of the exterior holes, etc...  but there is still dirt rattling around in there.

Do I just need to be resigned to have dirt in my tailgate? Is this my badge of honor for using my truck like a truck?

It happens that things get inside the gate. I would look at removing the plastic liner on it. That way you can access the inside to clean it out.

2023 Denali HD.  We must be the lucky few - seems like there would be more posts about this design fail.  I hauled 2 yards of pea gravel and never though there would be openings large enough in the hinges to make my tailgate sound like a baby rattle when I open and close it.  $90k just doesn't get you much these days.  Ugh...  I removed the cover from the main gate and popped the plugs from the speaker holes.  (thankfully I don't have the sound system).  I was able to use a shop vac and get most of it out.  There is a lip up inside the step that had a bunch stuck in it and I used a small flat blade screw driver to dislodge the rocks.  Slamming it multiple times also loosened things up.  I imagine a few trips down rough roads will work more loose so this will be wash, rinse and repeat a few times.  I left the plugs out of the step for now.  Lesson learned.  If anyone else has insight into this I would love to hear it.  Seems like some simple rubber boots in the hinge openings would have been a good idea.

I use tarps when hauling hay but sometimes they do not get used and my wife does remind me it is a truck

I have looked at a few things depending on your aggravation level

Mild annoyance (I have this but not installed yet)

Severe annoyance

I’ve never used my truck for gravel/dirt, etc. but when I do, I will go to Harbor Freight and get a tarp.  I have a spray in bed liner but I put a BedRug over that.  However, I don’t have the full liner, just the flat bed cover so anything could/would end up in the tailgate.  That would drive me nuts.  I’d probably get a big movers blanket too just to lay down before the tarp to be double sure.

When I haul gravel, dirt or similar I go rent a tilt-bed utility trailer and pull it behind my Silverado......

Just too much possible damage to an expensive truck.....trailer rental price is cheap in comparison.
