USB mp3 playback is pathetic on refreshed 2022.

Recommended Posts

Here's my 1st major complaint about the refreshed 2022 trucks all pertaining to playing mp3s from a USB drive (Bose unit, but I doubt that makes a difference).

-  Can only select from 8 songs, 8 artists, or 8 albums while driving.  Hope all your favorites start with the letter 'A'.

- There is not scroll knob, instead you have to touch an arrow on the screen.  But once you touch the arrow 3 times, it locks up, and says you can't do anything more do to driving.  If GM thought we couldn't touch an arrow more than 3 times, then give me back my scroll knob.

- No option to play by folder.

Anybody work around this yet?  I supposed I am going to have to get an ODBCII writer and change some parameters.  Had to buy ODBCII writer with the VW, which had similar controls over equalizer and fader settings.

im curious but why dont you just put the files on your phone and utilize android auto wireless? I can't imagine you have more than 20 gigs of music your trying to play and that should fit on any modern phone, no problem

The thing I noticed is that the volume of the music off the USB thumb drive is lower compared to the radio (AM, FM or Sirius).  I don't care so much about the screen being "locked" since my MP3s are on shuffle.

Can you use the left side (backside of steering wheel) controls to move through your playlist as you can in AA in lieu of the onscreen touch controls?

Wonder how far you have traveled with your eyes off the road doing 70MPH looking at the screen to figure that out?

What's with the USB stick?  Just stream music from your phone using Bluetooth.

I bet the cassette player sucks too...

For the 12 years I had my 92 Chevy that I recently sold I had a cassette tape adapter. It made it possible to plug my iPod or iPhone through the cassette. I had an FM cigarettes plug thingy that played through an unused FM channel. Same difference. Like our knowledgeable and brilliant  Vice President always says. Sometimes you do what you do when your doing what you do. While your doing what you do. Because that’s what you do.😎

I think you need to switch format aka stop using a USB stick.  Put the music on your phone if possible or get a cheap iPod with big storage space or some other music playing device and load the songs on to that.

Agreed this new refresh makes USB mp3 almost useless. Those saying put the mp3 files on a phone instead or comparing it to a cassette doesn't help the OP. that's kinds like saying buy a cassette player to play the cassette not use the built in cassette player... ( think replace cassette with MP3).

The option is there to use the device it should work like it did before the refresh, the option is there but it sucks.

The Audio system on a whole is Weak. They have not keep up with innovations, putting in very cheap speakers along with sluggish operating systems. That equals customers Over paying for a bigger screen and very weak sounding system. USB should be an excellent Source of music availability, instead you can’t even search your folders or Put your recordings in order. The only option is playlist, Artist, Album, Song and the system put some in strange orders.

Cheverolet, Terrible job on your products your offering your customers! Sad.

I have similar issues with my 2021 - I cannot browse at all if the truck is in motion, it's completely locked out.  That's ridiculous but not surprising...what's truly weird is that the system doesn't follow any pattern whatsoever when it picks the next track.  Random is not turned on but it still doesn't play tracks in order...well not consistently at least.  It will play five or six tracks in order starting from the track that's on when I start the truck.  Then it will jump BACK to that first track and play those five or six again, then it will jump to a completely random place in the folder and start playing from there, and from that point it's completely random what it does - it will play two or three in a row then skip, sometimes it will play like 10 in a row then skip.  It's really maddening.

And no, playing music through your phone over bluetooth/AA is not a solution.  The sound quality sucks and the level of control sucks.  Furthermore, in my case at least, it still doesn't fix the order issue.  USB MP3 playback is a basic function for a modern infotainment system...no reason we should need external solutions.

I have zero quality issues with music through Apple Carplay from my iPhone.  No random skips, jumps, etc.  Just works.
