Heating up to quickly?

Recommended Posts

Got a 2012 2500hd with 6.0. Replaced radiator, water pump, clutch fan, CT’s, thermostat and housing over the winter. More of a preventative maintenance deal than anything else. Now it reaches operating temp 210 according to dash in 4/5 minutes seems really fast. Any thoughts on why it’d heat up so quickly?

This time of year, that's pretty normal if you ask me.

I can drive my old chevy malibu from my house to the gas station which is only 2 miles away and I will be just shy of 190 degrees. That car has a 3.1 engine in it. My truck takes about the same time at 70-80 degrees outside.

Also just a tip, the gauge cluster lies and it does it by a lot. That 210 mark isn't even the real coolant temp on those trucks. The stock thermostat is only a 194 degree temp. The gauge cluster will read 210 before it even reaches 190 degrees. If I had to guess you're at about 180ish when the cluster shows full temp. A scan tool will show you the real difference.

This is 100% correct. At one point, I used to swap out my T stat for the summer to a 160, which worked perfect and the ac ran cooler, but after some research and testing I found my truck doesnt get above 195 unless towing.

I would HIGHLY recommend a upgrade size trans cooler if you tow, the stock ones seem to be bare minimum IMHO.

Good to know, this is my first gas pickup since a Toyota in high school so I was a lil unsure.  It has a trailer hooked to 99% of the time.  The 6 speed is a lil surprising in how well it handles it. I thought it’d be terrible but I love the pickup actually.
