Ok guys, my buckshots are about ready to die so I'm in the market for a new set of tires. I am looking at 3 options right now:

Cooper Discoverer STT

Super Swamper SSR

GoodYear Wrangler MT/R

I want something in a 35/12.50 or 315/75 which ever size they come in, does anyone have any of these tires, whats the wear like, hows the road noise and most importantly how do they do in the mud!

If you decide on MTR's you won't be dissapointed in their performance.I find them very quiet for such an aggressive tire and they wear great. They flat out get it in the mud ,and the bullet proof sidewalls are definately a big plus.

I had MTRs on my 2500HD. A usual comparison is against the BFG Mud-Terrains. The MTRs are generally considered to be the superior ROCK crawling tire and have stronger sidewalls that are less puncture resistant. They are considered to be noisier on the street and not as good in the wet as the BFGs. The BFGs are what I now have on my TJ. They're considered to be the superior MUD tire as compared to the MTRs.

This "conventional wisdom" comes by way of the many Jeep events and Jeep Forums I am a part of. I have also heard (merely a rumor) that Goodyear has been having some productions issues that relate to the quality of their tires. A guy posted on another forum (Jeep forum) that he finally returned his MTRs after two different sets started chunking real bad and also came out of balance. GY finally just credited his $$ toward a different brand.

If you think BFG MT's out perform MTR's in the Mud click here for a little schooling....>Tire Test

Don't need any schooling thanks. I said what I said based, once again, on "conventional wisdom". I'm sorry, but I really don't care what one test from one publication has to say about a tire's performance in mud. There are simply too many variables to accurately choose a winner.

I'm saying what is fairly well established from off-roaders using these tires in myriad real world tests and competitions.

I'm not saying that there's anything wrong with MTRs. Like I said, I had them on my truck (had to get rid of them with 28k miles on them because they were heavily chunked, flat spotted, and unable to be balanced.). I've wheeled in my Jeep with both and I maintain my opinion that BFG MTs are the better mud and street tire and MTRs are the better rock tire.

Hey, you're entitled to your opinion--and I'm entitled to mine. Just don't want anyone to think I'm talking out my butt. I really do know something about these tires! :)

Peace,

Very well stated Paul S. This is my second set of MTR's and I haven't had any problems at all,not even a flat. As far as the tire test goes it's not really the magazine's opinion,if you read the article they explain the lenghts they went through to make it a fair and unbiased test.I have run a set of BFG MT's before but I don't think they were as good in the mud as the MTR's but they surely are a good quality tire and if goodyear quit making the MTR's I would definaltely be running a set.

I saw the other day that an off-road mag. picked the BFG MT's over the all of the tires. For an all around tire plus mud. I agree w/ paul the MT's are alot better in the mud. Plus they clean off well. Doenst hold mud in the tread like the MTR's. Well thats all for now.

Everyone knows if it isn't a BFG it is a POS.

:D

MTR's

Nothing will ever compare to a bfg, especially the at's, you won't find a better tire except of course a larimie steel rider. :D

:D

I don't understand why people argure about stuff on the internet, trying to stuff your firm opinion down someone elses throat is pure gold. hahahaha

Once again i'd like to conclude with this

BFG's ROCK, MTR's SUCK

Disclamer: my pet ferret got into the chemicals under the sink again and is posting without my consent.

Geez dude I'm not trying to force my opinion down anyones throat. The post your refering to is a tire test by 4wheel & offroad. Take it up with those guys if it bothers you. Guess you are incapable of comprehending that. In your case your probably right though ,Your little truck probably wouln't be able to turn the MTR's.:D:D

I have 285/75-16 MTRs on my avalanche. The offroad and mud performance is great and they look great too. BUT...I HAD NOTHING BUT PROBLEMS WITH THEM...and looking back I should have bitched about them and got them replaced!!!

My problem with the tires was an oscilating sound and a little wheel shake. I took them back to discount tire and had the balance checked...everything looked good. Talking with another friend of mine (works at a tire shop) he said they were most likely out--of--round. The only time I was happy with them was off road.

I didnt mind the noise...kinda expect that from that aggressive of tread. It was the out of round noise and slight wheel shake...which changed when rotatingthem. they didnt wear that great either 35,000 miles and they were toast.

I went with 325/60-18s Nitto Terragraps and I am much happier.

my $.02
