OEM Navigation

Non Onstar. Can someone advise how, if even possible, to get the nav screen to show speed limits (not radar zones or anything related, just plain speed limits)?

Previous truck did not have OEM navigation, so I purchased after market nav (had to replace the head unit) which showed speed limits (and you could set a limit, above which it changed to a warning red). I always had this option on as I often travel through unfamiliar areas and liked having the speed reminder showing.

I was hoping the new truck would have this feature but it appears it does not, at least not that I can find.

Thanks,

Marv

It's only on mid/high trims -- but I'd guess that if the truck has nav, then it has a trim that includes the speed limit display.

It's a DIC setting, needs to be enabled on the 'info pages' tab.

It will show on dash (not nav screen) as a white box with the speed limit in black.

( on roads that don't have signs, it doesn't display, even thought 'unsigned' roads have default speed limits)

Can also be shown on the HUD if you have that system.  iirc, the setting to display the speed limit on the HUD is separate from the one that enables speed limit display on the dash.

Fwiw, there is also a selection possible that will give a warning it the speed limit is exceeded.

It can be shown will show 2 places on the dash:

-- I normally have a different dic page displayed, so only have the speed limit the upper left spot (and on the HUD)

-- speed limit is 90kph (about 55mph); truck is set to display 'inch' units, but unit selection does not change the value the truck gets from the speed limit database

Thanks very much for the replies,

pokismoki - Not sure which "map app" you are referring to, Google Maps, Waze or other. However, the reason I got OEM nav was to eliminate the need to always have to fiddle with my phone. I have used Google Maps and it eats battery power like there is no tomorrow, so constantly need to remove the phone from my hip and plug it in (then unplug and replace every time I exit). And, I travel to/from Colorado/B.C. often and when I go, I usually turn off my phone and keep it in my camera bag. And there are other issues with travelling in areas with no cell service.

redwngr - Thanks much for the detailed response. I will check to see if I can get the DIC to show the information.

It's not possible without Onstar.  I had it in the center display and when using the nav screen, but once the free trial expired, it went away.  I recall seeing that as a feature of one of the Onstar plans.

Only way without Onstar is to use a phone app.

mrjulian416,

Thanks for the follow-up information. My free Onstar trial has expired as well.

Funny enough, while searching the DIC for the speed limit display, I found a setting which allowed one to set a speed limit and when the vehicle exceeded that speed, a voice would give a verbal warning. Not really sure of the value to this as every time you entered a new speed zone, you would have to manually go into the settings and change the speed. Weird it would have this but not a simple speed limit display in the Navigation.

A Nav system (IGOPrimo) I added to a previous vehicle had a speed limit display and it did not require Onstar or a phone connection to work. It was just built into the Nav.

speed limits are from a database stored on the truck

My onstar expired 12 months (or more) ago.

Still have the speed limit display thing working.

No onstar. Phone not connected.

Speed limit is on dash, not on the nav display.  (good thing, because I rarely have the nav display up)

Went through every option for the DIC. Able to get the turn by turn display, but no luck with the speed limit(s).

Marv

Were you using the dic display settings (accessed using steering wheel controls) or the settings on the audio/navi/infotainment system (accessed using the touchscreen)?

What year/trim is the truck?

And this truck has factory nav?

It's the cluster.

When GM offered factory nav upgrade for IOS radios for all of what, 15 months? they had you re-program the cluster to show the navigation functions properly as if it was a factory IOT/IOU nav radio truck.

With the aftermarket factory nav upgrades, you don't get that ability to flash the cluster.  And, because its not the factory kit, you won't have the necessary auth code to issue a re-flash of your cluster from GM and the dealer.

You'd have to pursue a Denali/High Country cluster swap to get those the speed limit indicator to work.

So I guess I'm confused. Maybe I misinterpreted the original post.

I took it to mean that in a past truck you installed add-on nav, but on current truck it is factory nav?

Post by @newdude post seems to suggest he is thinking the current truck is an add-on?

Does the current truck you're trying to do this on have factory nav?

What year and trim is the truck?

Also

Did you go thru the settings on the nav (touch screen) AND the settings on the DIC (steering wheel control)?

The speed signs are accessed in DIC settings (accessed with steering wheel controls.

(there are separate settings for each of the speed sign locations)

Think perhaps I may have, inadvertently, contributed to some of the confusion in this thread.

By OEM I was referring to the system native to the truck, but in my case, I obtained it after-factory from OBDGenie, which "wakes" the dormant system (for lack of a better description), and uses an SD card produced by GM. Everything available through this method is OEM, except the noted speed limit display.

I wish these car companies could get the infotainment systems together,  honestly GMs still looks and feels like the 2014 I had and isnt what the others had.  Not sure I need vehicle speed on my nav as its about in 3 other places on the dash.  But plug this in or dont plug this in, use this app, onstar,  it needs to end.  Somebody needs to hire apple or bill gates to figure these systems out.
