TCM tuning(6L80E)

Recommended Posts

After watching many video's on YouTube regarding how to tune these TCM's  to make  the transmission last longer i decided to call a local tuner to see if he thought tuning the TCM(only) for longevity was a good idea? I said to this tuner i wanted him to make the changes below. He said that this was a bad idea in a nutshell which basically contradicted everything i have been reading  and watching.

Is this tuner "full of it"? or will making these changes help my trans last?

Disable DOD
Tcc apply pressure ramp
Tcc desired slip set to 0
Apply and release set 317 and 319
Upshift x and y add 15 at 14°

Local tuners suck azz..... best connect with blackbear or Diablew. Or cam. One of them can get you straightened out and won't charge an arm, leg and organ like the local shops.

I called around the DFW and screw that... they haven't the slightest clue as to what they are doing.

Sounds like a goober to me. TCM tuning can for sure extend the life of the transmission and torque converter. Perhaps he doesn't know of the problems these transmission have already.

I haven't messed with the TCC apply ramp pressure but I change other stuff. I zero out the TCC slip, disable the torque converter for gears 1-4 and only allow it to lock in 5th and 6th. But I increase the speed at which it does lock so it doesn't do it at 30mph type of thing. I push it out to above 40mph and nearly 50mph for 6th gear.

I have no idea what this means though.

I am wondering if he was trying to get In his shop to spend 1000$ to tune a stock truck. He said making those changes would decrease transmission life and cause hotter fluid temps.

Did you notice a difference in the way the truck drove after you tuned it?

How are the trans fluid Temps after you those changes?

I'm not sure how making the converter work less and adjusting shift times and so on would reduce transmission life but I guess that guy is entitled to his own opinion even if it's wrong.

Yes, the transmission shifts better. It's why I do all those changes to my own vehicles or local people I've tuned for.

My transmission fluid temps didn't change at all. Still runs around 130-150 degrees once warmed up, maybe a touch higher in the middle of summer. I have the transmission thermostat removed so it runs at a minimum about 50 degrees cooler than it normally would. GM also now sells a revised thermostat that opens at 156 degrees I think which is way better than the stock 190ish degree thermostat. I highly suggest you buy and install that if you care about transmission life.

BlackBear tuned my transmission almost 5 years ago and it runs in 140s down here in South Florida cruising down the highway.  170s around town in stop and go driving, not locking up the converter in the lower gears does not seem to have increased temps.  Almost 171K now, Blackstone Labs report on it is great!

i definitely need to do something asap because my fluid temps hit 187 on back roads cruising around 40mph and the outside temp was 60 degree's and the truck had no load.

@BlackBearPerf

Flip the pill or get the new, lower temp, thermostat for the transmission.
