Tonneau cover leaking?

Recommended Posts

I currently have a Lund advantage tonneau cover on my ‘21 sierra with the 5’8” bed. It’s a soft top with the fabric not the shiny vinyl. I have the covers for the rear stake holes as well. I had the cover on and it seemed to be leaking. I said something to Lund and they replaced it for free. This one leaks too. I can’t tell if its the cover or it’s leaking through the stake covers? I just want a waterproof cover, even if its a hard cover or better stake hole covers. Has anyone had leaking issues like this and what did you do to resolve the leak? Also, this cover will not let the tailgate open remotely, it has to be pulled down. And, the top multi tailgate won’t open at all unless i lift the cover and pull it down. Please help

I have had 2 of the soft tri fold that GM has on their accessories page. Doesn’t have a brand on it, but it might be the advantage with the vinyl. Neither one leaked. Not sure if it will open the gate remotely have never tried that. I have opened the top gate without having to lift the cover. I ride dirt bikes so I wanted a cover that was light and easy to remove. I am a big fan and would highly recommend that one. Part number 19416976

I assumed the stake holes allowed water directly to the bed. I was going to get a cover that goes from edge to edge and covers the stake holes to be safe, now I just need to pick one that is actually waterproof. Of course the one from Lund is supposed to be waterproof, which it really isn’t.

Thought you were asking if I bought plugs that went in the holes. I think the cover goes over them. I will check and report back.

I just checked. They don’t cover the whole thing only about half of it. I’m 99% sure those don’t drain into the bed. Pretty sure they drain straight out to the ground. There are covers for those available on Amazon you could try if you think that’s the issue. However like I said I’ve never had any leaking issues and mine haven’t been covered up all the way.

I got the stake holes covered already, i just didn’t realize the stake holes drained straight to the ground till i looked through them yesterday. I just want a waterproof cover and its disappointing that Lund cover wasn’t, neither was the replacement. I don’t think they still sell it, which makes sense.

Almost every tonneau cover leaks, to some extent. The ones which leak the least (and some even not at all) are the solid, single hinge type, because there are no hinge joints which can be breached and most have the cover extending over the sides and rear of the truck. I had an Undercover solid on my previous truck and it did not leak at all, even when I took it into the car wash.

I am currently looking for a folding cover for the new truck and have researched the topic to death and all reports suggest at least some leaking. Your happiness just depends on your tolerance level.

I understand there’s always a chance of leaking, but this is just excessive. Plus I finally have a truck with a sliding rear window so you can hear that soft cover flapping when you’re driving. I just wasn’t thinking about it when i bought it. I’ve never had a hard cover, but I think that’s what I need. Either hard folding or retractable, just haven’t decided.
