Annual Maintenance

My truck is coming up on a year of service. It has 14,500 miles on it. I’ve been and will continue to change the oil and do tire rotations every 5,000 miles. I’m going to get new wipers and a new cabin air filter.

Is there anything else I should consider in my annual maintenance? I was thinking about a new air filter, but I think the gauge only has it in the 40% used range (I’ll check it tomorrow but I know for sure it has more than 50% left according to the gauge. Might still replace it based on this discussion. Anything else?

Of course I’ll do an inspection when I get the oil changed but there doesn’t seem to be much to do annually according to the manual.

I reset my air filter since I am in southern California and it's not a dusty climate. However, I will not reset twice. I think it's based on a timer, not by the dirt on the air filter, unlike the brakes and oil - that's based on how often I use it and the condition of the two, not the length of time.

My factory original cabin air filter has almost 50% life left and I have 50K+ miles on it. The truck is 2+ years old so I don't think it's based on time, as the OP stated he has about the same % left on his and he has only had his truck for about a year. I'm inclined to think its a combination of multiple parameters, time and mileage being only two of the many.

Mine's 3 years old and is slightly over three years old, with only 9,000 miles on it. It was showing 30% when I reset it a few months ago. I don't even run the air conditioner that often, that is why I was pretty sure it was based on time, how long the engine was running, not the miles.

Damn you let your cabin air go for a long time. I change mine every oil change and it comes out filthy every time. Im curious how nasty yours is looking.

The Air Cabin Filter reading says over 50% remaining, but then again I still have the factory original cabin filter in every vehicle I own, 2 with almost 200k miles. As a matter of fact, I am not sure that I have ever changed a cabin filter in any vehicle I have ever owned. Not too concerned about the cabin filter honestly.

And this is how vehicles end up smelling like sweat and old men and smoke and other nasty ******. It takes only a few min to change the cabin air filter stop being lazy.

How about some paint maintenance?

Wash, clay bar, polish , wax/sealer.

Clean and clay bar all the glass too.

Interior , well you know how to do that.

That’s a good idea. I did have a shop clean it and put a basic sealer/wax on it before winter, but I think an annual program would be a great idea. I’m also considering a rust proofing program but I’m not yet comfortable on which one to go forward with.

So I looked and my engine air filter is at 75% (thought it was less). I’m thinking I may replace the air filter on a bi-annual basis.

Also, I looked at the indicators and could not find one for the cabin air filter. With or without an indicator I feel very comfortable changing the cabin filter annually. Those filters can get nasty. I don’t intend on letting it get anywhere near that.

Looks like I’ll change the wipers and the cabin filter this year along with regular oil changes and tire rotations.

There isn't one. The only air filter life monitor is for the engine. I change mine at 22,500 miles per the GM recommendation in the owners manual. If I lived in a dusty climate or was working on construction sites, I'd probably change it more frequently.

Have you ever pulled a cabin air filter for it to have a ton of bugs and mice in it and its all black and nasty?

No, but I’ve seen examples of that and that is why I’ll be changing it annually and even more frequently if needed. I held my last truck for two years and changed the filter once at the year mark. It wasn’t bad at all, but it’s pretty easy to change and not too expensive so I think once a year will work fine for me.

Thatll work. I usually do mine every oil change, its a 20 dollar paper filter.
