Tis the season. The problems are back. Of course they waited until I was 1200 miles away on a trip. 2 mornings in a row I got the "programming remote" message and could not start the truck. My 2020 truck is my favorite vehicle of all time, especially if I want all of the cool programmed features, etc. But it would be nice to be able to rely on it actually driving. I had the battery replaced when I got back but low and behold I'm locked out again this morning. The only solution is call my dealer (60 miles away) and then they have no clue what the problem is because, of course, it doesn't happen for them. I am starting to think I got a lemon. I also keep getting little quirks like "park assist" is always locked out, or it can't find my phone for a while. It seems like there is something between the security and entertainment system that just keeps hiccuping. Finally beyond frustration. If GM wants to help, they need to call and talk to my dealer and find a definitive solution. Or make it right somehow. (I really don't want to buy another truck).

This is certainly not what we like to hear, MayorMike.  Please know, customer satisfaction is extremely important to us. Condition

Some customers may comment that after using the remote vehicle start, either from the fob or app, they experienced any of the following issues:

  • When they enter the vehicle and press the start button the engine stalls
  • If they try to restart the engine, it will not crank
  • If the remote start times out they are unable to restart the engine with the start button
  • When trying to turn engine off the engine stays running
  • Unable to turn the ignition off
  • Service Steering Column Lock Message, if equipped
  • Dead Battery

Cause

The cause of the condition may be a Body Control Module (BCM) messaging issue.

Correction

Reprogram the BCM following service information instructions to update to the newest software level.

Curious as to why this got posted here. Doesn't apply to the US, doesn't apply to most (any?) of the vehicles listed in this thread as having issues, and doesn't call out the fix that has worked for others.

Isn't US covered by 'America'?

So GMCustomerServic tried to fix the problem. They replaced a number of cables through my local (55 miles away) dealership but I still have not seen an invoice so I don't know what all they did. Something with the ignition, etc. GM covered some from the original warranty because this all started while in the warranty period. The rest was covered by my extended 150,000 mile warranty. I received an email from GMCustomerService saying the problem is fixed and they will file it all away. I replied that I still have the remote start problem but have heard nothing back. The dealership is a little perplexed by it all. I went to start it over Christmas and it was completely dead even though I have a 2 month old battery. Nor response from GM anymore. I have tried placing a maintainer charger on the truck and I have not had anymore problems at this point but I also bought another vehicle and drive it most of the time so I've used the truck twice (used to be my favorite vehicle, EVER!). There was talk of buyback, points, etc. but I'm not interested. This is the 2020 Pacifica Blue AT4 that is absolutely awesome. The only thing it doesn't have is the "smart" cruise but the adaptive cruise is excellent. My only suggestion to those of you still facing this problem is try to keep a solid charge. My service tech at the dealership has allowed me to send the "Remote Learn Pending" screenshot to her when I have the problem so we can document everything. That's it for now.

This has been happening to my 2019. It's also had some camera issues where they completely cut out and gave me a bright blue screen. It was on a heavy rain day where I'd been traveling 70 mph for 40 miles or so, not that that's an excuse for them to stop working altogether. My main concern is the key fob issue. I'm afraid of it not working when I disconnect the battery at some point. Did you ever figure out what it was?

Cranium: I have had this happen after driving through a strong rain shower as well (the key fob problem). The dealer changed some cables but that did not seem to work. Lately I have been using a trickle charger on the vehicle every 10 days for a few days. I have not had the problem again, even after several remote starts. The problem always happened after using the fob to remote start the vehicle and that has not happened in 2 months after using the tricle charger regularly which indicates to me a slow discharge somewhere. I have a new battery as well. You might try the occasional charge just to see if you have the continuation of your problem.

Thanks for the reply. I never use the fob to start it, but I do use the app. I found this in another conversation today too. I'm telling my dealer about this possibility.

Sorry you are having the same issue. and It does sound like the exact same thing my truck does.  Take a video of what its doing and of you putting foot on brake and pushing the Button and send it to your service rep at the dealership.  That's how I finally got them to stop and investigate deeper.  For my truck they replaced the drivers door latch. which did not help. this last time they replaced the drivers window master switch.  I am 3 weeks in with no issues after the window switch replacement. I'm knocking on wood as I'm typing this. LOL   The cooperate technician says everything points to the drivers door.

I hope you can get some help.  please keep us posted.

Here is an Update Oct.23 2023 it's been a year now since the driver's door switches have been replaced, I have NOT had one issue with the push start not working as it should.  It seems my problem has been solved. This was very frustrating to say the least. I hope everyone else with this issue gets it taken care of.

rlambert, I was wondering if everything was still working fine.  I'm having the EXACT same issues that you were having.  Battery dies in less than two days.  Based off this thread I'm thinking it keept putting itself in the remote learning mode over and over and over again until the battery is dead.

Thanks in advance!

Has anyone else that's had issues with this had success with replace the drivers master window switch?

I'm taking mine in Tuesday to hopefully solve the issue with the master switch. My front camera is always out and I had the whole system blank out. They are reprogramming the cameras that day too. I will report back either way. A couple posts I saw, the master switch fixed the problem.

Just heard from the dealer and the engineer was there and remotely checked my truck from 60 miles away. They are going to try to replace the body control module to see if that helps. I will hear from them some time next week.

For those of you having the issue as described in the original post this is what your truck is doing the whole time it's off when it's in one of it's moods.  I setup a GoPro in time lapse.  Took 3 days but I caught it.  For reference ever 20 seconds in the video is equal to 1 hour realtime.  if you just want the money shots skip to 1 minute and 50 seconds in the video.  Nothing happens before that.

The three messages on the screen are:

1. The main message you see is "Start Vehicle To View Application"

2. The first message that flashes says "Remote Learn Pending Please Wait"

3. That message is followed at least 10 minutes later by one that says "Press Engine Start Button To Learn"

It then repeats over and over again.  Occasionally takes a break and then starts again.

To give some time reference here I started the camera at 8:08 PM.  It started being moody around 1:45AM-1:50AM and the last time I saw it flicker was probably around noon.  So it did this over and over for 10 hours.  This is absolutely what's causing the battery drain.  Depending on how often it does this and how strong your battery is it could easily drain the battery overnight.  I have had this happen.  It didn't even make it 24 hours one day but normally by 48 hours it's dead if I don't start it.

Tonight I set the GoPro up on the top of the steeringwheel so it's right on the dash screen and I can (hopefully) get clearer video of the messages if it gets moody again but I'm 100% positive about what the messages say that are popping up.

I have an appointment tomorrow to change the drivers master window switch.  It's the cheapest place to start since the dealer is "only" charging me $154 to change it.  The door latch will be next and that is $250 for the part.  After that I guess it would be the BCM.  Not sure what eles would be triggereing it to go into remote learning mode.  However, I do plan on setting up the GoPro for a bit after the switch is installed to see if it continues to happen so I can catch it right away.

Anyway, here's the video.  I hope this helps someone as much as this post helped me.  It at least gave me a place to start looking.  I'll continue to update the progress as things move along.  Feel free to reach out to me if you have any questions.  best way to reach me is on Discord.  My username there is cerberus9480.

I'm going in tomorrow. I'm hoping they listened to what I learned in this thread and have the master switch ready. I will show them this video too. Thanks for catching that. Sometimes when I get in, the GMC logo on the instrument cluster flashes weird too. It must be tied into the problem somehow. Thanks again.

Mine flashes weird sometimes too but I'm sure that is unrelated.  Mine has done that since the day I purchased it 5 years ago.  I think it's just a software issue that doesn't hurt anything and they never cared enough to fix it.

She was being a moody ****** again last night so I got clearer video.  Here are screen shots of the messages on the dash.  Video is uploading to YouTube.  I'll share the link once it's done...
