Vibration after new rims and tires?

Recommended Posts

Hey all, so I've been enjoying my truck for a while now and decided to upgrade the stock 17" rims / tires! I went from a stock 17" rim on a 255/70/17 tire to a 20" OE Wheels LTZ style chrome wheel on a 275/45/20 tire. The truck drove absolutely fantastic and smooth on stock rims and tires. This morning I had the new rims and tires put on and it felt really good driving around town! It was only until I drove on the freeway above 60 mph that the entire truck developed a heavy vibration. Couldn't feel it at all in the steering wheel. Speeds below 60 feel fine, and like I said it feels great driving around town. It's the freeway driving at higher speeds that this problem occurs. Now the first thing I can think of is an improperly balanced tire. I've read a lot of horror stories already about people needing to balance time after time again with no luck in resolving the vibration. Most cases of vibration from imbalanced tires from what I read seem to show up as a vibration in the steering wheel, mine doesn't vibrate in the steering wheel at all. I feel it in the seats and I can see the fold down console vibrating heavily as well.

Truck ran and drove perfectly fine on stocks. The tires are Goodyear Eagle GT II 275/45/20s, I only received them yesterday as well as the OE Wheels 20" rims. I'm wondering if any of you have any other ideas as to what might be causing this issue other than improperly balanced tires? Now I did go back to the tire shop that put the rims on my truck. I told them about what was happening and the guy at the counter said "Our balancing machine is broken... come back Thursday." To me that's almost an obvious cue that my tires weren't balanced correctly if at all in the first place! I had a busy day today and had no time to check for weights. Maybe I'm just overthinking this all too... but like I said, I'd like to know if there could be any other causes to this issue which JUST started happening after I had new tires and rims installed on my truck. Truck is also stock ride height with no modifications done to the suspension...

Have the tires and wheels properly " Road Force balanced". Once done correctly your issue will go away unless the tire is out of round.  Firestone and discount has the tire balancers, but its up to the tech to know how to use the machine. If they do not find the high and low spots on tire and rim and align them properly you'll still have the issue.

Three usual possibilities:  Wheel weight fell off.  Tire moved on wheel.  Improperly balanced.

One More possibility,  bad tire(s).

Beside the road force balance I would get a 4 wheel alignment.

Thank you all for the suggestions! I’ll get that looked at asap. I have the truck parked for now till I can get it looked at. Don’t want to risk driving around like this and creating more problems elsewhere!

Let's see some pics of the 61-62 Chrysler.

What year is it?

That’s a car which belongs to someone I know. It’s my dream car! I totally wish it was mine… it’s a 1962 Newport and it is wicked awesome. I’m a big Mopar guy but mainly for only older cars! ‘30s - ‘70s but I love all cars. Trucks however always have to be a Chevy for me! I come from a lowrider background and have been raised in a town with a lot of lowriders and Kustom cars. I tend to like a mix of both! The ‘62 Newport to me is one of Exnir’s best designs at Chrysler. I almost had one too!!! It was too far gone sadly. I plan to get one eventually when the time and price is right!

One of my favorite things about ‘60 to ‘62 Chryslers is most definitely that gorgeous dashboard / astrodome instrument cluster with ‘panelescent’ lighting!

I do however own a beautiful Mopar! A big C Body. A pretty well loaded 1968 Chrysler New Yorker which is currently under construction. 7.2L V8, 3 Speed Torqueflite 727 trans. Has the original 2.76 Highway gears but I may add a 3.23 suregrip later on… It hasn’t ran in 42 years! I bought it when I was about to turn 19… now 2 years later I’m about ready to finally get her started. I had the 440 and 727 rebuilt. I collected very clean NOS parts to rebuild my dash and had my speedometer cluster rebuilt. Swapping the front bench seat for buckets from a 1966 Chrysler 300… have big plans for the car! I started a thread on another forum which is where I basically “live” on the internet LOL. Here’s a link to see some of the progress I’ve done. Haven’t updated it in a while but I’ll be getting back to working on the 68 so it’s ready for Summer!

That is a very cool car . So is yours.

I'm into the the big "Moboats" as we called them.

Back in the early 80s I had a 67 Newport 383/727 . One wheel wonder tire roaster. Ugly green color.

It was a doctors car so it was mint inside and out.

I was young and dumb and beat the tar out of it. Sold it for $500 .

HA Moboats is a good one! I also heard people call them "C-Barges" lol. Thank you! It took a while for fuselage cars to grow on me but I've began to even like some of those. If I had to pick one it'd definitely be a 1970 Plymouth Fury... Man, that Newport sounds awesome! I LOVE the front end of the 67 Newports. The bumper is so awesome. I wish the 68 had the cool slotted parking lights on the bottom like the 67 does. I've heard so many car stories like that 😕 Young, had fun with the car and sold it then regretted it later. Would you ever get another if you could?
