Supercruise, what am I missing?

Recommended Posts

I did not like the adaptive cruise control especially on the German autobah in a rented Audi A7 because the vehicle did not know if I wanted to go faster or slower whilst changing lanes and a lot of times it brakes when I am already intent on passing a slow-moving vehicle, so I had to mash the gas and watch the fast drivers get pissed at me for braking in the first place like an idiot and messing up the rhythm. I wish the rental car did not come with that, I usually drive between 85 to 100 mph, the vehicles on the left usually drive at 110 mph, while trucks on the right lane travel at around 60 mph.

Now, a vehicle that completely steers itself, not bounce in the lane from the left to the right like the Toyotas, I am all up for that especially here in the U.S. where there's a speed limit.

I would not want a self-steering car on the autobahn where the speed differential can exceed 100 mph (trucks going 60 mph and the occasional Porsche hitting 160 mph on the left). But everybody here sticks with the speed limit so the speed differential is nonexistent. I don't know if I explained that right.

I don't get the hoopla over super cruise.  Hoping some people here can enlighten me.  The commercial shows that I can tap along with the music with 2 hands, but that doesn't seem like a big deal to me.  I just don't get in what situation I would ever use it.  Perhaps I could starting smoking, eating, texting, and drinking in my vehicle.  I know how to pass with a trailer (rarely happens, since I'm driving slow).  Some examples of how super cruise will make the driving experience better would be appreciated.  Also, any thoughts on future software updates possibly enhancing super cruise (so I can take a nap while driving, which would be really sweet).

People act like GM is forcing you to use it lol. You can still drive the car as you want, even if you have Supercruise optioned.

I am a car guy...i love driving, love cars, first car was a manual and enjoy just going around town....BUT...lane centering technology is by far one of my favorite things ever...for when I want to use it. Anytime I travel, I always choose one of the newer Hyndai's/Kia's that have it.

It's just for convenience. It takes out the nuisance of driving when doing a lot of highway miles. It also helps if you do ever get distracted from whatever it may be.

(this is not good...don't follow me....but there are times when I'm using it for 30-45 minutes at a time and I hardly even look at the road.)

Dang, I need this!  I would love to be able to eat my fries with ketchup while driving!  Haha

Just need to learn how to steer with your left knee. Doesn't work so good on turns, but winding roads aren't a problem.

Some of the roll-your-own types learn to steer with their knees.

Others learn to roll with one hand.

Just sayin'...

Imho, Supercruise, because of limited mapped roads, is going to have limited numbers using it.

Probably more will buy it, because they want to say there vehicle is loaded, or because it was packaged with other stuff they want - and then discover it can't be used on the roads they are on most often.

We'll have to see how this all changes when Ultracruise is available.

Like many here, I don't think either is for me.

However,  'Those who say it can't be done need to get out of the way of those making it happen'.

It's easy for us to throw out a list of obstacles -- but reality is most of those working on this stuff already made the same list (an likely longer lists with eve more issues) and are busy developing methods to overcome them.

I loved the adaptive cruise control I had on my old Lexus RX350. Helps when I just want to cruise with traffic instead of passing everyone in sight. Makes long distance driving outside of the city more enjoyable and less tiring as well. Now the lane keeping assist was a piece of crap in that Lexus. Bounced from side to side and occasionally wanted to take me on off ramps. Also had to have my hands on the steering wheel which kinda defeats its purpose. But since it wasn't that reliable, I had to do that anyways.

GM's Super Cruise is supposed to be more like a Tesla in that it's truly hands free driving. For long trips on highways, I'd definitely appreciate it. I wouldn't use it solely, I do still want to be in command of the vehicle. But there are times like when I'm eating on the go... it'd be nice to have Super Cruise take over while I open that burger wrapping for a few seconds. I'd still likely keep one hand on the wheel after that.

Just ordered a 2022 Denali today with a price. $8,000 for supercruise, No thanks. At that price point it pushes you into the Denali Ultimate which I don't want.

They have pricing now?

Screw all that fancy technology stuff when I get in my truck I want to drive it and not have a computer do things for me, all that crap is for is people can say "hey look what this truck can do" who gives a $hit. Like the GM commercial when the guy takes his hands off the wheel and start clapping playing handzees with himself and the woman next to him, you still have to watch were you're going so why not just have your hand on the damn steering wheel.

Our 2020 Equinox has that lane assist crap which I have turned off, I was playing with it one day going down the road and the road was straight it worked for a little then started over correcting like I was drunk driving, so I took over and re-engaged going straight same thing but then the road markings got light like worn out and the damn thing didn't see them and started going off the damn road.

Feel free to not buy it. I have put 25k on my truck in 8 months and another 12k on the car before that since the beginning of the year. It makes 10 hour drives less miserable. Don't want it, don't buy it. Nobody is forcing you.

Could you elaborate on how it makes the drive better?  Is it mostly the freedom to move your shoulders and arms so they aren't in one location for 10 hours, or is there more to it than that?  The best thing IMHO about cruise control is the freedom to move my right leg in the cabin on long drives.

I would like to see a device that beeps very loud at stop lights when idiots can’t pull up. Turn lanes with 3 cars that can hold 6. What’s with the new deal where people need a car length in between? Forcing people into travel lanes. Iv gotten to the point where I scoot in-between. There’s that much room. It’s either that or go around.

It keeps me on the road. I can stop and grab a bite and eat a sandwich while still paying attention. It also helps, for me, to keep my arms and shoulders from getting stiff holding them in basically one position for 8 to 10 hours.

Also, until you have been through stop and go with a good adaptive cruise, you really can't understand how much it lowers your stress level dealing with idiots in traffic. I have road rage, admittedly, and it all but takes that away because I just let the vehicle do most of the work.

Hello folks,

I want to extend an invitation to share your experience with SuperCruise for a research that is going on right now, trying to inform future legislation on how to monitor and control these systems. Participation is totally voluntary and successful completion of the online survey ( Welcome to our survey! ) is compensated with $25.

Anyone in California, who is willing to take part in an in-person, driving simulator experiment, has the chance to sign up for the driving study at the end. This will be another $175 for about 2 hours, including a drive and an interview around your usage and behavior. You can also directly sign up for the study here: Welcome to our survey!

Information about the company and the driving simulator can be found here: Driving Simulator
The project is a joint effort between several partners in the automotive industry in the USA and Germany. It will help make systems like SuperCruise better in the long run and will most importantly inform law makers to take reasonable decisions, based on facts and lessons learned.

Your support is greatly appreciated!
