Truck takes 8qts so wouldn’t it be a half quart?

Yeah. I misquoted. I typically add up to a quart between oil changes. I change the oil and filter with 8.5Qts.

I've read through a lot of this long thread and am feel a lot of dread.  I have a 2020 GMC Sierra 2500 Denali.  The dealer put 6 quarts in the engine at 19,000 and I have since started burning oil.  First time I took it in they checked for leaks (found none) and gave it back saying come back in 1,000 miles.  Of course, once GM got involved, the dealer realized they did not conduct a proper oil consumption test.  I am in the middle of one now and can see a huge shift in 'cover you ***' type of documentation.  Likely because GM has contacted them about it.

Read the last order and you can smell the BS.

  • First return to dealer it was barely on the dipstick.  Added 1.5 quarts (so they claim)
  • Second return is was not on the dipstick.  Added 1 quart.
  • Noted evidence of towing.  **NO STUFF!!  Who drives a 2500 for pleasure?  But I have not towed since early Fall, 1,000's of miles before the last oil change and consumption test.
  • They state on the order that 1 quart per 1,000 miles is acceptable.  Assuming an oil change at 5,000 miles, and I lose 62.5% of my oil??  From driving 60% highway / 40% city?

Note the order has a quantity of 2 for quarts of oil.  Why 2 if they only used 1?

I have had 4 Chevy and GMC pickups plus 7 other GM vehicles.  If nothing further is done, I likely need to sell this very expensive truck.  If I do, it will be my very last GM product ever.

Make sure you hang onto that evidence that they billed you for two quarts but said they only added one in the oil consumption check records. Their credibility will be damaged by that if you get to arbitration or a lemon law case.

Seems like excessive oil use to me.  That might have been normal in an early 50's engine but not in any I've driven lately.  Doesn't mean that you'll get any satisfaction from the dealer but that's my take on it.  Some Ford 5.0 L engines have excessive oil use problems and Ford is fixing some of them.  I agree - have it documented while under warranty.

I have a 2020 Silverado 3500hd 6.6 gas as a wrecker and it does the same thing . Chevrolet has an issue with these motors . I’m not sure if it’s cause it’s the first generation new face Silverados or what but you change the oil and drive less than 1000 miles and all the oil is done

This whole oil consumption topic is all over the place.  When I first started reading about it, the engines either used oil from day 1 or didn't.  It was pretty much black and white.  Now I'm seeing people with 30k plus miles saying it is happening to them.  It's a very concerning but somewhat confusing topic too because I also have read, and this includes myself, of engines that never use a drop.  From a curious stand point I'm wondering if using a 5W-40 HDEO oil would slow down the oil usage for those that are experiencing this problem.  If anyone out there that is having oil consumption problems and has tried this please respond back, or is going to try this in the near future.  I would very much like to hear some results of trying an HDEO in their engines.  I might actually go to a 5W-40 HDEO for my truck just for the heck of it.  It certainly can't hurt anything except for maybe a small % gas mileage loss due to parasitic drag.  I doubt anyone would actually notice a difference at all but the engine might in a positive way.

So far none with my truck about to turn 8k miles but my truck has been babied. Heck, if only pulled it up near redline one time passing on a two lane highway. I wonder if the ones using oil get driven hard? I’d imagine a wrecker sees a hard life.

I drive the piss out of mine.  Sees redline several times a day going back and forth to work.  When towing our camper my foot was to the floor when merging onto the highway, when passing on the highway my foot was to the floor as well.  My truck has seen redline more times than Biden got votes....No joke... 🤣

I do wonder if a lot of the people claiming they've never used oil actually check, or of they have the dealer always change their oil and have just never heard anything about it. There is a common issue with the Toyota 5.7L 3UR-FE where not enough of the FIPG seals on the cam towers get applied at the factory and oil ends up leaking out. I had two different Tundras and both had the leak, but tons of people claim they "don't have" the issue, including two people I personally know with Tundras. However, they didn't actually know they didn't have the leak, they just didn't know they did (kind of the absence of evidence isn't evidence of absence thing). When I checked their trucks for them, they both had the leak. Anyway, my point is that people claiming they don't have oil consumption issues might partially be people really just saying they don't know if they have consumption issues.

Got another story for you @Pryme, I do love to tell stories lol.  Anyhow back in 81 my grandfather gave me his 71 chevy pickup.  The bed was rotted out as was a lot of it (salt from northern Maine) go figure.  It had the 350 V8 in it with a 2 barrel carb and 3 on the tree.  I had just got my license and beat the snot out of that truck.  He had babied it for the 10 years he had owned it.  It only had 70k on it if memory serves me correct.  Anyhow being 15 years old, had just got my license and now had a cool ass truck with a 350 V8 in it.  That engine didn't last 3 months before it started burning a ton of oil.  So my dad and I removed the engine and tore it down to rebuild it.  What we found, is that because it had been babied all of those years, that the top of the cylinder walls had the dreaded edge on them.  I had broken every compression ring on that engine and the oil rings were toast as well.  Lesson learned from me, make them see redline from day one and all will be fine....lol..

I think that is plausible.  Actual knowledge these days about vehicles or anything going on with them is kind of rare from what I've seen and dealt with.

I'm on my second 6.6 gasser, both driven like @Jettech1's. Rode hard loaded and unloaded with zero consumption. Every oil change done by me and checked meticulously.

I do have a really close buddy who's brother drove a 2020 srw 3500 work truck gasser. His truck used oil so bad, chevy was going to do an overhaul. Problem with that truck was it pulled 16k+lbs between MN, Iowa, and WI daily. I have never seen a truck abused so bad and that was part of the reason I bought my 2021 gmc 2500 gasser.

A buddy of mine has a 2020 Silverado 2500 with the L8T and said he used 2 qts of oil over about 8,000 miles, so I guess that's within GM's "normal" tolerances. He also tows a 37' bumper pull travel trailer with a loaded weight just under 10k lbs, so it works pretty hard.

It sounds like he doesn't change his oil very often.  Not judging of course.
