auto door lock

Recommended Posts

hi everyone I'm new to the forum and also new to Chevy trucks.  I recently purchased a 2021 3500 silverado and have a question on how to stop the doors from automatically locking when the truck is put in drive.  I find this very annoying that I need to put the truck in park to open the door.  can anyone help me? thanks

You can adjust the door auto lock in the "Settings" app Although every vehicle I have owned since at least the early 2000's has had this feature turned on. You an always just use the door unlock button or pull the door handle twice to unlock it whenever you want.

You cannot disable it. It's an automatic safety feature. The only auto lock feature you can customize is the number of doors to unlock when you turn the vehicle off in park. Check your owners manual for instructions

I did read that in the manual.  I thought I read someplace that the dealer could do it ny reprogramming .  I had a 2011 Ford f 350 prior to this Chevy and I was able to disable it in the Ford.  I really hate that feature.

Just put it on your list of irritating things to set before each drive.  1. Turn off auto start.  2. Turn drive mode to sport.  3. After car is in drive, hit the unlock button.

I'm sure there’s a few more, but it would be nice if auto manufacturers (GM) would allow for very specific customer setting to be made permanent.

Though, in this case, pulling the handle twice isn’t too bad.  But, yes, an irritant is an irritant, no matter how small others perceive it to be.

It used to be possible to disable it on GM's -- but not anymore.

This is from an '04 manual:

Programmable Locking Feature
The following is the list of available programming options:
Mode 1: All doors lock when the transmission is shifted into gear. This is the mode that is pre-programmed in
the factory for your vehicle for automatic transmission vehicles.
Mode 2: All doors lock when the vehicle speed is greater than 8 mph (13 km/h). This is the mode that is
pre-programmed in the factory for manual transmission vehicles.
Mode 3: No automatic door locking.

I checked a '10 manual, and by then the 'no automatic locking' option was gone.

There were a bunch of 'auto unlock' options

As fastk9dad pointed out -- to open door without shifting out of gear -- use unlock button OR double pull on door handle.

Double pull gets frequent use on our vehicles.

I didn't know about the double handle pull from inside.  thanks guys.  I still would like to be able to disable this.

You mean in frustration, you didn’t try pulling the handle repeatedly? :)  That’s how I figured it out.

I'm not certain, but believe this is a safety related feature on all newer vehicles. If someone was to stop their vehicle without first putting it in park, and the doors were unlocked, they could start getting out of the car and run over themselves. Then, instead of that person taking personal accountability for their own stupidity, they would sue the car manufacturer, hence the car manufacturer has to make a change to protect stupid people from themselves. Go look at your lawnmower and you'll see at least one decal indicating that you should not put your hand near a moving blade. DUH! [/Rant Off]. :)

I'm sure somewhere some place somebody did something to cause the manufacturers to make stupid safety features that cause most normal people headaches.  in my opinion these "safety" features end up causing more accidents in the end because people try to rig their own go around which ends up usually being more dangerous than the original thing they're trying to fix.

It's not a safety feature against driving self over, since the double pull (or button) to unlock it doesn't care if it's in gear or not.

Autolock might be considered a safety feature to prevent someone outside the vehicle opening a door when stopped or travelling slow.

Double pull has been around since at least the '70's

Easier than using the lock button/lever on a truck without power locks.

FWIW, manual door locks are still standard on a reg cab work truck. (2022 1500 LTD version)

You don't have to put it in park to open the door. Just pull the inside handle 2 times.
