Brake pedal kick back when starting truck.

Recommended Posts

I purchased a 2003 Silverado 2500HD with 140,000 miles on it.

When I start the truck the brake pedal violently and noticeably pops up. If I have my foot on the brake pedal, it's quite a jolt.

The previous owner had the issue when I bought the truck and he never had it checked out.  There is nothing wrong with the brake system other than that.

I have yet to find anything online from someone who has experienced this problem.

Since I know exactly what you mean, I guess I have experienced this quite a few times over many years.  But, I can't tell you if it was my truck or any number of the other cars I've had or have.  I consider it normal.  It's possible that I now subconsciously don't put a foot on the brake, or maybe just very lightly, when starting.

Maybe somebody else has chased down this "problem"!!

Your truck has Hydroboost power brakes. When the power steering pump gets up to pressure the brake pedal will tend to move upward, but not "violently". My guess is dirty fluid or a partially plugged line. The steering box could also be responsible for this pedal behavior.

This is a safety issue, so have a good mechanic take a look at it.
