Touch Screen has a mind of its own

Recommended Posts

that's why we'll all end up leasing or download an app to borrow a truck from the GM dealer on a daily basis.  once your done with truck at the end of the work day leave it on street in front of your house and a fresh vehicle will be waiting for you in the morning..  soon  you will own nothing : )

After having a serious issue for a year and a half with my radio changing stations on its own, and reading this thread, I did the following:

1.  Replaced the shark fin with a new one for $65.00.  Did not fix the problem.

2.  Had my HMI module software updated at the dealer's for $60.00.  Did not fix the problem.

3.  Ordered a used display off of ebay for $200.00.  Took less than 10 minutes to remove the old one and plug up the new one.  Fixed the problem.

If you plan on doing this beware of the 7" screen vs. the 8" screen situation.  My original was an 8" screen so there was a little gnashing of teeth when trying to match up the exact same thing.

Like others here, my 2018 suffered from the same actions. Following another member's lead, I removed the touch screen from the dash and disconnected the digitizer ribbon cable (brown) from the PC board. This identified the screen  as the problem and eliminated the annoying and constant changing of both the touch screen and the DIC screen. I can still access most (if not all) of the screen via the radio control knob (right) and the steering wheel controls. This works fine for my use and I'm in no hurry to spend any money. Not a workaround for everybody but it was quick, free and works.

I have the same problem with my 2015 Silverado. I was hoping to see someone had a fix for it but unfortunately it looks as though I will have to deal with it. Dealer tried everything from software updates to replacement parts till they told me they could replace the screen. I don’t see how that could fix anything as how can a replacement radio fix the instrument cluster screen from changing from speedometer to radio. I think it’s a bug in the computer that they don’t know or care to fix.

I had the same problem with my 2018 GMC Canyon, and it was indeed the screen.  After watching enough youtube videos on removing/installation, I ordered a replacement screen from a supplier in China.  I first removed the screen and retrieved the exact part # from the back.  A quick google and it came up with a supplier on AliExpress.  The seller had both new and used, and I went with new, and he/she was quick to respond to any questions I had.  Yes, it's a China supplier, but the process was smooth, and I got the replacement screen in about 10 days (they quote a month) via US Mail.  I paid with PayPal, and AliExpress has feature that requests you confirm receipt in good condition before they release funds to the seller.  Installation was quick (I had been through the removal and reinstall of the old screen before), and all issues went away (2 months now).  My total costs were about $210 for the screen shipped, and about $8 for some plastic tools from Amazon designed for working on modern vehicle interiors (basically plastic pry tools).  The new screen is noticeably brighter and crisper than the old one, and all issues are gone.  I'm tempted buy another as back up should this one fail in a few years.  All in all, I believe my 2 year trip through this ordeal is over.

I replied to a similar post on here about this same problem I'm having with my 2017 Silverado at 38K miles.

Yes I think it's the display. Can be just needs cleaning on the contacts or it's just bad.

This just started a week ago. I will not take it to the stealership. I figure it out myself.

I'm done with GM and their cornies.

Bought my truck two weeks ago and this happened on the test drive, I recorded a video and showed it to the salesman. Sales manager stepped in and wrote up a contract that they would fix or replace until issue resolved, hopeless screen replacement will fix!

The digitizer on the screen is the failed part. You can replace the screen (has the digitizer attached) or do what I did and disconnect the cable from the screen pc board. Your screen will look fine but you will no longer have "touch" ability. All functions (well most all) can then be accessed via the controls on either the radio or the steering wheel.

Here's the vid on removing the screen (and other things).

This vid shows the touch screen removal.

You then want to unlatch the tan/gold ribbon cable and secure it. You do not need to actually disassemble the screen. The ribbon cable powers the digitizer. Plug in your wire connectors and power up the unit to check that the screen lights up but of course you will have no touch capability. reverse the steps from the first vid and you're done.

In the 2nd video where he removes the cables for the screen, could you identify which TAN/GOLD ribbon cable to remove? the 1st one he does or the 2nd one?

Into the second vid, at the 40 second mark, you will notice two ribbon cables visible. The smaller tan/light/brown/gold on the right is the digitizer ribbon cable you need to disengage.

Note that after he removes the cover to the pc board/screen he rotates the screen and removes the large ribbon cable on top. This is not the correct cable. The second cable is the correct one. Again you do not need to remove the screen. Just secure the cable so as not to damage/short the pc board when re-installing the cover.

Yes, I had a service appointment today; the advisor told me that the technician found that the display needs replacement. They will call and schedule an installation appointment when they receive the new unit. I thought it was the IO5 HMI module itself or wire connection. They tried updates for the HMI, to no avail.  It must be something physically wrong with the touch screen display. I’ve seen YouTube videos that show touching the “blue” button on the mirror and another that shows pulling the 20 amp radio fuse, wait 10 seconds and re-insert the fuse to reset the radio. Search YouTube for that. It didn’t work in my case. Good Luck.

The blue light on the mirror is for onstage
