I have a 14 silverado I want to add a brake controller. My question is can I just add the factory switch to make it work. It appears that a the wiring is there

Welcome to the site.

No, if the truck did not come with with the option, it can not be added. It is embedded in the BCU of the truck.

Aftermarket is your only option.

Some modules are missing that are needed to make it work as well as @JimCost2014 mentions about the BCU,  it would need programming. If it was even possible, it wouldn't be economical to do. I have yet to read where anyone was successful adding it.

But on my 2016, there is a connector on the firewall under the dash to connect an aftermarket one. That's what I ended up doing. I went with a Tekinsha Prodigy P3 brake controller. Nice thing with that is that Tekonsha also offers a harness that is already pre-wired that connects to the P3 as well as the connector on the firewall. One of the quickest accessories to install that I have added. Check and see if yours might also have this capability and I would suggest going that route.
