Cap Light Wiring

Recommended Posts

 Just put a cap on my 2004 2500HD with the heavy towing package and 5th wheel wiring. No problem wiring in the high mounted cap stop light into the brake light circuit but I want to wire the cap interior light to the same circuit that the bed (cargo) light is wired to.

Where is the easiest place to tap into this circuit? What is the color of the wire that powers this light? I need to run the power wire down the drivers side frame rail and tie into the cap wiring in the left (drivers) tail light area.

I can always trace the cargo light circuit down but thought if one of you guys (gals) have done it it would save me a lot of time:cheers:

I wish I knew...

I have always run mine off the "C" batteries... I would love to have some 12 volt interior lighting in my bed because I sleep in there along remote trout steams, and the stupid "C" batteries last only a few months whether I use them or not!!!

I ran a fused wire from the aux battery along the frame and through the tail light to get it into my cap for a light that was mounted by the A.R.E. dealer when it was delivered. Dealer usually taps into the 12vdc circuit behind the hitch, but it will eventually corrode and crap out, so I always run one long wire directly from the battery.

I did something similar to what Bob had done. I got some heavily insulated 14 gauge stranded wire from Lowes that I ran from the battery, down through the engine compartment, along the frame and then up through the rear light (drivers side).

The people who installed the cap wanted to just hook it up to the running lights, so they would have to be on in order for the cap light to work. Not a good idea, especially seeing as how the light in my cap has it's own on/off switch. My solution seems to work pretty good.
