Many service codes out of the blue

Recommended Posts

Hello all, strange things going on with my Silverado . I have a 2018 1500 5.3 with 29,000 miles on it. Two days ago on a short drive, the trailer brake system code popped up a couple of times and I hit dismiss and figured it to be a fluke. I haven’t towed since last week so I wasn’t hooked up. Popped up again on my way into work yesterday and hit dismiss again with no problem. That’s until I left work and everything went haywire. First the trailer code popped up then stabilitrak popped up, had no acceleration. Was going about 35 speedometer was dead, tach was bouncing up and down but the engine was not surging. Power steering code came up and steering assist came up then 4wd. Then it seemed to be cycling through all these codes over and over. Was only a couple of miles from home so I nursed it home. Had little acceleration and shift was hard a couple of times. After I got it home I disconnected the neg battery cable for 20 min. Then tried again. While parked I started it up and it went thru the codes again : trailer brake system , stabilitrak etc. engine was idling but making a faint whistling noise. Tach bouncing up and down but no surging. Then the emergency brake light and abs lights would flash on and off. I have absolutely no clue as to what is going on as the truck has run flawlessly since I drove it off the lot. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Could be your battery is on it's way out.  That would be the first thing I would check.  Everything on these trucks depend on the voltages being correct.  Fluctuations in voltages can cause certain things to malfunction and/or codes to appear.

Thanks for the reply Phil. I’ll check the battery when I get home from work. Didn’t realize there were 2 similar threads going on this. Sorry folks

To clear memory, you'll have to leave the battery disconnected for at least 3 hours, then what I do is before reconnecting the batt, I momentarily touch the positive and negative batt cables together to remove any residual capacitance.

Thanks Roger, I will try that. My mechanic can’t look at it until Monday.Showed him my video of the service codes cycling and he seems to think I have a short maybe from rubbing. I checked the battery and measured 12.7 volts so I think that it’s ok. I still have my rv in my driveway so I plugged it into the truck to see. I can engage tow haul mode but I have zero response when I adjust the trailer brake slide, doesn’t even show on the info screen. I’ll try to attach a video that shows when I turn the truck on and then start it. Thanks for the replies so far

Well I hoped I would be back on the road, but not to be. I replaced both the trailer brake switch and the control module, disconnected the battery for 3+ hours, touched connectors and no change, just keeps cycling all the codes. Harness maybe? Talked to the dealership even though my bumper to bumper expired 2 months ago, I still have the power train warranty. Don’t no how good that will do me. Repairs are supposed to be covered if the vehicle will not drive and it’s from manufacturing. They said it is in safety mode that’s supposed to protect the vehicle. Who knows. Very frustrating. Going to check whatever ground connections I can get to. Have an appointment Monday that I really would like to avoid. As I’ve said, any advise would be greatly appreciated. Hope everyone has a good weekend.
