VIN ASSIGNED.

Recommended Posts

Hello to all, newbie here.  Just bought my first new Chevy Silverado HD Custom. Actually it was July 5th when I signed away my everything to buy it. It was also my wife’s birthday.  YIKES!  It’s not here yet and the dealer is doing a tap dance about where it happens to be. I thought maybe I could get a bit of information from the forums that would help me out with a few questions.  First a little explanation.

We bought the truck with the idea that we were going to use it to move our grandson and his family to Tennessee from here in Texas.  I said I’d move them with my cargo trailer that I used to move my wife and I from California to Texas. They have a one bedroom apartment, no kids and two dogs.  A very light load.  But, I made that move using my Nissan Frontier, which is a great truck, but I can’t spend another 14 hours in that cab driving.  13 round trips to California and back at 3000 miles each round trip, and I’m done. And plus the fact that we are retired and want to hook up to a travel trailer or fifth wheel and go see this incredible country.  We were told the 2500 would be here before we had to leave for Tennessee on the 29th of this month,  which is why I completed the deal.  With their promise, this leads me to question #1.

During the truck’s build cycle, at what point does it receive a VIN?  Is it at the beginning of the build cycle, which is what I suspect, or at the end when it’s finished?  I ask because it becomes a trust issue with the dealer.  Like I didn’t already know they are about as crooked as a dog’s hind leg.  If it’s at the beginning, then it’s going to take 10-12 weeks to build and ship. However, I was told the truck was finished and had just received its VIN and headed to the railhead for shipment because it had its VIN.  It will be shipped to Mesquite Texas where it will then be delivered to the dealer in McKinney, TX.  That was on Monday, 5 July. On July 9th, we stopped in to see if we could get a location on the truck.  We were told it’s still sitting at the railhead.  I didn’t like hearing that.  Anyway, we went home and continued to wait.

Jump ahead to today, July 14, again we stopped in to determine the location of the truck.  THIS TIME we were informed that it’s on its way to the railhead. Wait.  The last two reports had it AT railhead, not being transported to it.  This brings me back to when is the VIN assigned? I’m thinking it’s at the build start and that my truck was just beginning the build process somewhere around the first of July, and is still several weeks away from delivery.

#2 Does anyone have a website that I could actually track the truck from GM?  Probably not but I had to ask.

Thanks for taking the time to read.

Thanks for taking the time to read.

You will need the order Number or VIN on the truck but you can go to Chevrolet chat and ask for the status code on the vehicle.  Scroll down to where it says “message us”

https://www.chevrolet.com/contact/call-us

The VIN is generated once the truck is built on the assembly line, as far as I know.  Mine was ordered 4/22, built almost 2 weeks earlier that what GM had listed as TPW (tentative production week) which was always 7/5, and shipped from MI several days after build.  As of today, it is sitting in our local rail yard awaiting transport to dealer.  I’d guess it will be very close to 12 weeks to the day from when order was placed to when it hits the dealer lot.

Thanks for the info.  So, what you’re saying is in regards to your truck, it was a new order initiated by you.  Mine is a little different in that they stated the truck was already completed and that it already had the VIN on the day we bought it.  I do indeed have the VIN.  So if it’s already done and has the VIN attached, there should be a definitive location and date of arrival then.

Right now as I’m answering your post,   I’m on with the Chevrolet.com contact and have received more info in five minutes with them than what the dealer has given me it almost two weeks. So thanks for that bit of genius!

That’s true, in that mine was an order initiated at the dealer at my request.  But, your truck is no different in terms of when the VIN is created, and in your ability to track its position in the supply chain.

The problem is, there’s no consistent time frame right now from (for example) a VIN assigned to the day it arrives at the dealer.  It could sit at the local rail yard for days or more waiting to be trucked to the dealer.  Or it could sit at the plant awaiting transport to your region.

Typically the VIN is known when the vehicle rolls of the assembly line.  The dealer cannot legally sell the vehicle till he is invoiced because until then its not his to sell and price is not confirmed.

GM order system event codes;

·        1100 Preliminary Order Accepted.  (Needs dealer allocation to move forward)

·        2000 Order Accepted by GMAD

·        2500 Order preferenced  (“Picked Up”), Sent to Production Control

·        3000 Order Accepted by Production Control

·        3100 Order Available to Sequence (now becomes more stable)

·        3300 Order Selected and scheduled by Assembly Plant (Target Production Week usually available now)

·        3400 Order broadcasted (in the assembly plant production system), build process is underway and locked in sequence to the end of the line.

·        3800 Vehicle Produced, it’s come off the production line.  VIN now available.

·        4000 Vehicle Available to Ship, passed quality control

·        4104 Bailment Invoice Created (Shipping doc’s)

·        4B00 Bayed, Parked waiting on transportation

·        4D00 Bayed for Quality Control (unknown time period)

·        4106 Bailment Released (Rc’vd by Transport Co.)

·        4150 Vehicle Invoiced to Dealer

·        4200 Vehicle Shipped (In Transit)

·        4300 Intermediate Delivery by truck (off-site rail head, up-fitter, etc )

·       4800 Rail Ramp Unload, at the final distribution center. Delivered by truck to dealer

·        5000 Vehicle Delivered to Dealer

·        6000 Vehicle Delivered to Customer (or dealer reported sale to GM)

·        9000 Order Cancelled
