Silverado Zr2 Officially Announced

Recommended Posts

Glad to hear this, maybe it will come with an aftermarket bumper for a hidden winch system like its smaller brother, the ZR2 Bison.

Anything less then Lockers Front and back, 35s, GOOD Shocks ( not Ranchos) more ground clearance , better departure and approach angles, Beefed up rear with at least 3.73s , Some nice seats . anything less  would be a failure IMO.

If a loaded LT TB is around 60-63K , this should get well into the 70s. And while were at it  can we get a special engine?  I love the 6.2 but this truck needs to be special  as This truck will be very important to GM .  I'm excited and looking for a home run here from GM.

Other articles showed pictures of shocks with reservoir attachments, mention of an aftermarket bumper similar to the Bison's with increased clearance and approach/departure angles, 35" tires, and mention of the already known upgraded 2022 interior.

Regarding 3.73's, if you go to 35" tires then 3.43's would be all that is needed to put it right back to its OEM final drive gear ratio which GM will most likely want to stay at.  Considering GM has a penchant for utilizing 3.42 gearsets, damn near the calculated 3.43's, I would assume the Silverado ZR2 would most likely come standard with a 3.42 gear set and 35" tires.

I will also say this will be interesting with the TRX having over 700 and the Raptor R will have over 700 . ( think Raptor R will be next year)

Does GM stick the Z06 6.2 Supercharged motor ? :)  Heck why not the 6.2 NA and a option for the 6.2 Supercharged motor .

If you build it GM, they will come..............

They should just super charge the 6.2 to over 1,000 hp. And add a sticker to the side bed with a raptor and trx behind a chevy trying to catch up. Hell have the chevy spitting lifters out of the motor at the other trucks.

Never understood the all the hype for a front locker on an IFS, that is a big failure point and not needed by 99.9999997% of the users. Just think why so few vehicles have tried or used it in an IFS and how the suspension moves. Seems it is just more or a discussion point for those when talking to other neighborhood dads which is why you see so many Rubicons in suburbia with sparkly clean axles and undercarriages; that and tire size. Just give it a good front traction based control system and that will get it out of anything along with a rear locker that pretty much anyone will put it in. Take a page out of the Jeep grand cherokee, that system works great or even Toyota. Not to mention it will be less of a failure point and more reliable.

Seems 33's are the tire of choice which is plenty unless you just want to have a tire size discussion at the kids soccer practice. Usually you are able to go up an inch from factory so fitting 34's shouldn't be a problem. This thing is going to get expensive but it isn't going after the Raptor/TRX, if the ZRX ever comes it will. Just keep the regular truck duty capabilities up there. Seeing the Colorado ZR2 lose so much towing and hauling makes it less useful for those with normal truck duties, then again I guess that is what the Trail Boss is for, all the truck capabilities with added off road abilities. Just wish they offered it as a trim package and not with blacked out wheels and bumpers, that fad has passed...

Front lockers are great and if you ever need one to get out of a sticky situation you'll be darn glad you had it. The problem with front lockers in IFS suspensions is the alloys/metals used in the construction of the housing as well as the housing design weaknesses.  The IFS housings tend to flex under heavy loads which create gear alignment issues which can result in severe binding.  That being said, a rigid housing with minimal flex can withstand a locker with significant strain/stress applied, but we will only get that if GM opts to design a more structurally rigid housing.  I know the newer IFS housings (19-21+) are structurally different than the older generation, to the extent that they are narrower at least, but I don't know what other dimensional differences are present.   Maybe the new IFS housing is strong enough for at least an LSD or posi-trac?  Who knows though, with modern traction control systems able to control the braking systems in order to create traction aides for open diffs, its possible GM provides an electronic braking application to simulate LSD operations.

Like you mentioned above though, most people will never need it for anything other than "cool points" when discussing their off road prowess with the neighbors.  However, that's ok too, the truck market is so hot right now its a status symbol in some areas to drive the biggest, baddest truck you can find, regardless of whether or not you use it for anything other than Street Queen purposes.  I have two good friends, one leases a 2021 TRX and another owns a 2020 Raptor, neither vehicle has EVER seen so much as a dirt road with them behind the wheel, and I would speculate it would take them a few minutes, if not a peek at the owners manual, to figure out how to put them into 4WD.  They could care less about their vehicle's capability, only that they are the best of the best and they wanted them.  That's partly the beauty of it too though, to be able to spend your money how you want and enjoy it for the purposes that you intend.  After all, how many corvettes out there will ever actually spin their tires down a track in their lifetime?

those are TB pics....did i miss a few photos?

really just depends on market they are shooting for and pricepoint..........GM plays it conservatiely....TB it seems was built to feel out the market ( cost them nothing over standard LT) and it sold like hotcakes for way more profit than std LT. (you can make a TB for almost nothing but mass population doesnt know)......think it would be smart not to compete with raptor and TRX but more than a TB if your talking volume....I saw a TRX other day up close and it is bad ass for production vehicle but still not a daily driver and thats what most use these for i think....they arent stupid and have orders from higher ups what they can and cannot do.....i wouldnt expect it to be super special though....maybe lil more capable than TB but profit is still name of the game

come out with a truck that has stock KING 2.5s on them or bypass shocks, lol......they wont cuz cost is too high for them....if you have the money doesnt matter if you only drive an off road truck on the street...

would like to at least see same shocks on colorado on new ZR2 though....ranchos are blah

It will be a mall crawler/pavement pounding princess just like 90% of all the other lifted trucks out there. The person paying $60k+ for these trucks doesn’t take them serious off-roading because “most” are on a budget. Hell, we have so many guys in this forum who buy Trailboss’s and then find ways to “cheap” out on exhaust or other mods. So it makes me laugh at all of this nonsense. But to each their own.

In all seriousness, GM needs to add the LT5 motor from the ZR1 Corvette from 2019 that had 755HP/715TQ. That’s a fantastic engine, super reliable/durable, and it has 50 +HP more than the TRX.

Also, GM if you’re listening, put in the LT5 motor with a 2 inch lowered street truck, (single cab and crew cab) 22 inch wheels, new corvette Z51 suspension/or ZL1 Camaro suspension, panoramic sunroof, ram air hood, and true dual exhaust.  I’ll buy it and use it for ALL it’s intended purposes. As a family hauler, boat/UTV tower, and street legal machine that I would drive to and from the drag strip.

GM don’t screw this up!
