Living in Florida

Recommended Posts

I've lived in Florida for 35 years and, guess what? We have another hurricane headed our way!
I've weathered, pun intended, many, and I have all of the preparations in place: generator, food stores, infallible Internet access (not sure how my city does it but I never lost internet during hurricane Irma.)
It's gonna be a fun watch at Elsa to see where it goes but, currently, it's headed my way - as a tropical storm, so far - hoping all will be OK! :)

Hopefully it will not be a major threat to any of us.

To me Florida has been lucky.  It seems NC is the major hurricane target.  For some reason they like to hit right at Wilmington were we just moved to.  So needless to say, I'm going to get the generator out and ops check it. Then if it seems like it is going to get to us I'll go get fuel.  Usually I get fuel way before hand and that seems to help keep us safe.

Like if I didn't get fuel early they hit but if I get fuel they don't and then I have 40 gallons of fuel to use. :)

Yep! During Irma, I had only 5 gallons and ran out about a day and a half in.
I was lucky, a friend had 15 gallons to share since his power came back.
I, now, keep 15 gallons on hand, with Stabil, of course, so I'm good for about 6 days on the generator.
However, as you mentioned, once you have it, you might not need it, but it's better that way. :)
I think it's @dieselfan1who has something similar in his sig.
EDIT, sorry, that's @Ravenkeeper:D

I didn't even know we had something coming towards us until I logged into FB today.  I've got water and a propane grill I'm good for a few days w/o power.  I just hate not having AC.  Not that it matters much UPS doesn't really shut down for much so I generally just go to work to sweat and get paid vs staying home and sweating.  Dad and I got tired of hanging plywood so we had storm shutters installed.  Now I just walk around the house closing them in the middle of a hurricane when I think it gets bad enough.  If this one hits it'll be the first with my dogs so I'll see how they handle it, probably not well unfortunately.

I'm more worried about the fireworks than a hurricane actually, but thanks.

Agreed, I've lost a cat for a few days during this time.
Many don't understand the booms take a toll on some animals and I had a father-in-law who served in WWII who just stayed in and tried to shut it all out.
To be honest, I used to love this stuff - setting off fireworks, bottle rockets and all that, until I learned what it does to people and pets.

4TH I can take. It's the fireworks for solid week before and after and after 10 pm that bother me. Rex lives in his crate for half a month. Poor puppy. Me....I just stay tired and the Mrs. angry. 😡
